2.0 out of 5 stars ガジェットだけはてんこ盛り, 2009/10/23
アステカの侵略、異形の神々の正体、300年前の真実、ジョンの記憶の秘密、ペッパーやスパイの目論見……と事件とガジェットは満載なんだけど、ただ出来事が流されているだけで、川を眺めているような読書感。
個々はけっしてつまらなくないんだけど、なんだろうなぁ、キャラクターたちが何が現れても驚かないから、読者にもワンダーがない。だから、家族と離ればなれになろうが、アステカのスパイが貼り付こうが、ワームホールが出てこようが、ラストで地球の現状が開かされようが、「あっそう」と何も感じない。
題名の使い方も、なんかもったいないなぁ。
続編が訳されても、少なくとも新刊買いはないかなぁ。

同じようなレビューで申し訳ないですが…。
バランスが悪くて見所がわからない作品というのが一番の印象です。

舞台は宇宙に取り残された移民星。飛空船はありますが蒸気機関あたりまでの技術レベルの世界です。
記憶を失った謎の主人公。突如、山を越えて侵略してきた異民族の前に滅亡の危機、残された人類世界を救うために北の地に旅立つのであった、てな話です。

話の前半がちょうど全体の半分。残虐な侵略者、逃げ惑う人々ですが、印象の薄い話がダラダラと続きます。結構辛い。後半はもう少し面白いのですが、引き込まれるようなわくわく感もなくて残念。
ちょっとヘンな話を選ぶこの翻訳者の好みからすると予想はされましたが、B級なお話でした。
ゲームのシェアワールドでも作品を書いているようですが、そちらの方が得意な作家さんなのかな。
