主人公のアリーは、ユダヤ教敬虔主義の若者だ。
考古学者の父親と、イスラエル政府のために失われた死海文書の一巻を探して、ニューヨークへパリへと赴くが、行く先々で会った関係者たちが、磔にされて無残に殺される。そして、ついに父親もアリーの目の前で誘拐されてしまう。

著者は哲学の研究者で、父親は高名なラビだそうだ。そういった、ユダヤ教や神学が骨の髄まで染みこんでいる人でなければ書けなかったであろう力作。
読者にも、それなりの知識と体力を要求する。
連続殺人や、イエスの正体といった謎はぞくぞくするほど魅力的。
特に、「薔薇の名前」を夢中になって読んだ人なら、この本も絶対に気に入るだろう。

一言で言えば、死海文書版の『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』。
題材は違いますが、話の構造・進行、読んだ印象はかなり似ています。

奇怪な殺人が起き（それは連続殺人事件へと発展していきます）、
血縁者が巻き込まれたことをきっかけに真相を追うことになる男女。
事件の背景には宗教。キリストの謎を守るべく、二千年に渡り時代
の闇を暗躍する組織・・・。

キリスト教を背景に歴史的事実（と見えるもの）を材料にした
ミステリーとしては、こちらのほうが先発ですね。

ミステリー小説としてはツッコミどころが多々あり、
「そりゃないだろ(^^;)」と思いつつも一気に読みました。

イエスを中心とする歴史ミステリーの部分は、非常に刺激的で
知的興奮の醍醐味を味わえます。
死海文書関連の本を何冊か読んだことがありますが、なるほど
こういう形式（小説）で解釈を示す手もあったかと唸りました。
その解釈内容は、これまで読んだ中で一番納得感がありました。
（何冊か読んだ中で、ですけど）
原始キリスト教やユダヤ教についてもっと知っていれば、
たぶん面白さも数倍でしょう。

ミステリー小説とすれば星☆☆ですが、
非常に読みやすく知的興奮に満ちた、死海文書の一解釈と思えば
星☆☆☆☆☆以上です。
どう読むかで評価が分かれるのではないでしょうか。

ユダヤ教とかについてほとんど知らない私でも一気に読んでしまいました。ストーリーだけでなく、訳文の素晴らしさに負うところ大でしょう。
また読み進むうちに死海文書とかいろいろと大変勉強になります。
しかし読みながら「そりゃないだろ！」と思うところが度々ありそれで星一つ原点。
