’７２年発表のファーストアルバムです。当時ロックファンに支持されていた音楽雑誌で、同時期に発表されたディープ・パープルのマシンヘッドとともに５つ星を獲得した作品です。
ディープ・パープル初代ヴォーカルのロッド・エバンス、元アイアン・バタフライのギターとベース、ジョニー・ウィンター・アンドの有名なライブアルバムで好演しているドラマーの４人で構成されています。
１曲目から最終曲まで豪快なハード・ロックを一気に聴かせてくれます。
うねるようなベースと派手なドラムの上にフェンダーギターのリフが、硬い音と、ややソフトな音で多重録音されて、サウンドに立体感と透明感を持たせることに成功しており、音作りに凝った印象があります。
ヴォーカルはイアン・ギランの声を甘くしたような声ですが、迫力で聴かせるタイプではなく、丁寧で説得力のある唄を聴かせてくれます。
以前は感じなかったのですが、当時最も音楽的に進化していた第２期ジェフ・ベック・グループのラフ　アンド　レディーが音づくりの手本になっているように思えます。
’７０年代で一番ハードな音が聴きたい人にお薦めします。

来年還暦を迎えますが、苦労の多かった青春時代、このレコードを部屋に
引き篭って擦り切れる程に愛聴いたしました。私どもの世代にとって、こ
れはロックの宝というべき傑作です。今聴いても全身にパワーが漲ってき
ます。是非とも孫の代まで聴かせたい名盤であると断言致します。

Deep Purpleファミリーをコンプリートしたいならこれは外せません。
キャプテン・ビヨンドは第1期のヴォーカルストであるロッド・エヴァ
ンスを中心としたグループで、その豪快なハードロックはD.Pの亜種の
中ではかなりいい線いってる方だと思います。残念ながらアメリカでは
あまり売れなかったようですが、D.Pファンなら聴く価値は充分あると
思います。
