   渡辺貞夫は時代の空気をつかむのがうまい。60年代に日本にボサノヴァ・ブームを広めたのはバークリー音大帰りの渡辺貞夫だった。フュージョンも、またしかりである。渡辺貞夫のフュージョン第1作は、デイヴ・グルーシン、リー・リトナー、チャック・レイニーらを加えて77年に録音した『マイ・ディア・ライフ』だった。翌78年にはデイヴ・グルーシン・ファミリーを総動員して本作をLAで録音、これが78年から79年にかけて大ヒットし、日本におけるフュージョン・ブームの頂点を記録した。

   このアルバム、通算で軽く100万枚以上は売れたというから、ジャズの世界では空前絶後の大ヒットだった。なぜそれほど評判になったかというと、まず曲がいい。渡辺貞夫は人の心をとらえるキャッチーなメロディを生み出す天才なのである。加えてデイヴ・グルーシンのアレンジがスマートで洒落ている。要するにグルーシンと提携することによって、最強のチームが出来上がったというわけ。ジャズ・ファンでなくても、タイトル曲は、きっとどこかで一度は耳にしているはずだ。（市川正二）

　若く才能のあるミュージシャンを積極的に起用し、いろいろな音楽を見事に自分のものにしてしまう渡辺貞夫は、この時期（70年代後半）、日本のフュージョンの牽引役でもあった。
「マイ・ディア・ライフ」よりもリラックスした演奏は、ジャズとポップスの垣根を取り払った、まさにフュージョンの名盤。

♪カリフォルニア・シャワーは、渡辺貞夫さんと草刈正雄さんを起用しての資生堂のＣＭソングでしたね。当時、まだ中学生でしたが、オレンジの香りのするコロンを買いました。笑。メロディーもかっこよかったし、資生堂のＣＭ『オレンジ・エキスプレス』が懐かしい・・・
