［現代大衆社会］は１９２０年代アメリカで生まれました．
いわゆる “Rolling ２０ｓ”（”うねりながら進む” ２０年代） です．
このときまでにアメリカは　１９世紀後半から２０世紀初頭にかけての
“生産・技術革命” （エジソン，フォード，．．．）を終え
さらに大戦による富の蓄積とあいまって　社会のエネルギーが
ブレーク寸前の状況にありました．
１９２０年代アメリカで［現代大衆社会］が
“ブレークし　加速し　さらに　超加速し　減速できなくなって
クラッシュしてしまう（=1929年大恐慌）”
そんな１０年間をえがいた傑作クロニクルです．

　本書は、１９２０年代のアメリカ社会史の傑作である。原著は、１９３１年に出版された。「ほんの昨日のことのようによく覚えている事件や状況」を書き記したものである。
　同じ著者による『シンス・イエスタデイ １９３０年代・アメリカ』という余り知られていない続編もある。こちらも面白いのだが、１冊だけというならば『オンリー・イエスタデイ』ということになろうか。
　１９２０年代のアメリカは、共産主義とＫ・Ｋ・Ｋ団の脅威とその退潮、生活とモラルの革命、誇大宣伝、禁酒法とカポネ、不動産ブーム、株価の高騰と崩壊…といった時代であった。
　禁酒法(１９２０年実施、３３年廃止)は、映画などで多少のことは知っていたが、信じがたい。それは、「動機が高潔で目的は高遠」であった。しかし、結果に対する想像力が欠如していた。緊密な組織を持った禁酒勢力は、組織を持たない禁酒法反対勢力より強力であった。
　また、法案が議会に提出された１９１７年は、戦争(第１次世界大戦)に関心が奪われ、国民は「ほとんどうわの空だった」という。
　１９２０年には婦人参政権が実現した。女性の断髪、口紅、喫煙、短いスカート。缶詰、デリカテッセン、クリーニング店利用率の急増。電気洗濯機、掃除機の普及。そして、就業。女性は「自分自身のために生きる」ようになった。
　ラジオ、自動車、ゴルフも普及した。アメリカは繁栄し、実業が尊敬された。また、新聞は種類が減って、発行部数が増え「ニュースや考え方も大量生産」された。脅迫的な広告で歯磨や口臭防止剤が売れた。
　アメリカの人々は「一時的に一つの事項に興奮」した。リンドバーグ、麻雀、クロスワード・パズル、精神分析、ジャック・デンプシーの試合に７万５千の観客が集まった。
　日本の「ほんの昨日のこと」でもある。

第一次大戦後から世界大恐慌までの米国の世相をつぶさに記録した、貴重な記録の書。

かなり長編なので、せめて世界大恐慌の下りだけでもお読みになったらいかがだろうか？
どこかいま我々が直面している危機と、にたようなものを感じ非常に興味深い。
