内容紹介

ロンドンから遠く離れた貧民救済所で、母親の命と引き替えに生まれ落ちたオリバーは、引き取られた孤児院で虐待を受けながらも、なんとか生き延びる。9才になった彼は再び貧民救済所に戻るが、そこでもやはり過酷でひもじい暮らしが待っていた。ある晩、ついにそこを脱出したオリバーはロンドンでジャックという少年と出会う。ジャックはオリバーに一晩の宿を貸してくれる老人を紹介。だが、その老人は少年窃盗団の元締めで、ジャックもスリ集団の一味だった…。名優アレック・ギネスとロバート・ニュートンが悪党を演じており、スリル満点の映画に花を添えると共に、イギリスで製作された映画らしく、古いロンドンの街並みも雰囲気を盛り上げている。

時代背景は１９世紀イギリスです。
貧富の差が生んだイギリスの腐敗をオリバー・ツイストという一人の少年を通して見事に描いた作品であるといえます。

救児院の腐敗、少年達を利用したスリ組織、金目当てで平気で人や情報を売り買いするなど、
特に大人達の腐敗ぶりは見ていて心が痛くなります。

オリバー・ツイスト自体は特に何もしないのですが、
周りの人々にただただ振り回されているといった感じです。

最終的にはものすごい偶然が重なって、実の祖父の家に戻り、
ハッピーエンドとなりますが、作品のプロット自体が面白いとかつまらないとかいうよりも、
当時のイギリスの最貧困層と一握りの金持ちの対比がうまく描かれている作品ととらえてみた方が、楽しめるのではないかと思います。

私はとにかく、最後の最後まで胸が痛かったのと、同じ大人として、ああはなりたくないと思いましたが、
やはり人間、ある程度は金がないとだめなのだろうかと、考えさせられたりもました。

そういった胸の苦しさに耐えられそうな方は見てみてください。
見て損はないと思います。

監督Sir David Lean（1908-91年）は、イギリス生まれ。『戦場にかける橋』(57年)と『アラビアのロレンス』(62年)でアカデミー監督賞を，『逢びき』でカンヌ国際映画祭グランプリを受賞している。『大いなる遺産』（46年），『インドへの道』（84年）など，英文学作品の映画化を手掛ける監督でもある。本作は48年（監督40歳）。ツイストを演じるジョン・ハワード。デイヴィスはネット検索してもこれ以外に出演作が見つからなかった。原作はチャールズ・ディケンズの同名作品（1837-8年）。

未婚の母親の死と引き換えに生まれ落ちた子供は，アルファベット順で名付けられてオリヴァーと名乗るようになるが，孤児院の粥の少なさに閉口して，「もっと粥をください」と言ったことで“５ポンドで売り”に出される。路頭に迷う中，窃盗団の少年に誘われるが（その長がユダヤ人なんだな，またこれが），彼の出自には秘密があった。その秘密を述べればネタばれになるが，賢明な読者は推察がつくであろう。映画はハッピーエンドで終わる。

リーン監督40歳で40年代なのだから仕方ないと言えばそうなるが，オリヴァーの心理描写がほとんどなく，オリヴァーを助ける女性への彼の気持の演出もない。ハリーポッター・シリーズなら，子供同士の人間関係がもっと濃密に演出されているはずだ。原作を読んでいないので，どこまで忠実に映画化されているかもわからない。

（英文学の古典を映画化しているという意味以外まで含んだ）古典的な映画（敢えて古い映画とは言わない）に最も欠けているのは，照明と演出する音だ。画面は暗いし，盛り上げ音楽もない。暗い画面は観衆を陰鬱にするし，観衆がいかに音に踊らされているかが，よくわかる。ただし，映画そのものの出来栄えとしてはよくできていると思う。（779字）
