　ややアイディア先行の話で、小説全体の完成度にはやや問題があります。ただ、そのアイディアは素晴らしく密度の濃いもので読ませる力のある小説です。
　内容は言語と世界認識に関する物語で、特殊な埋め込み言語を子供達に教え込んでいる研究者、アマゾンの奥地でドラッグのトランス状態の中で生み出される特殊な言語、そして新しい世界認識を得るために言語を採集しに地球へとやってきた異星人、この３つのエピソードが絡まりながらストーリーは進んでいきます。この中の一番目の話をもっと説得力を持って展開できていたら”傑作”になったんでしょうけど、それがいまいちよく書けていません。また、比較的丁寧にストーリーの進む前半に比べると、後半は明らかに急ぎすぎ。異星人も最初は魅力的なんだけど、だんだんどうでもよくなってきます。ただ、最初に書いたようにアイディアの良さで引っ張る力はかなりありますし、読んだあとにちょっと物足りなさも残るけど、読んでいるときは作品世界に没頭できます。

　昔、サンリオＳＦ文庫の「マーシャンインカ」を読んだとき、何だかとても強引なＳＦで感心したけど、読んでいる間はどこが面白いんだかよくわからなかったという記憶がある。読み終わって、思い返してみて、ああ、なんかすごい話だったんだなあっていう。「ヨナ・キット」はもう少し読みやすかったかな。でも、本書のイアン・ワトスンもやっぱり同じ印象。
　「エンベディング」というのは埋め込みという意味。ストーリーはというと埋め込み構造を持った言語をめぐる話で、そういう言葉を持ったインディアンの言語を研究している学者が、そういう言語のサンプルとして生きた脳を要求す宇宙人と対決するという。すごい話でしょ。着想は面白いし、とりわけ言語を習得した人間の脳だけを６個用意しろという宇宙人の要求に対してどうするかっていうのがなかなか見せ場。でも、結局のところ、「だからどうした」っていうような感じで強引にめでたしめでたしになってしまう。
　やっぱり、イアン・ワトスンは短編の方が読みやすいし面白いっていうものだ。
