冷戦の時代にはより現実感があったと思われるが、ソ連崩壊後の現在では多少現実離れの感が強い筋書きではあるものの、スパイの虚々実々の駆け引きを描いたスリラーとしては良く出来ており、最後まで緊張感を持続することに成功している。また登場人物が、ユル・ブリンナー、ヘンリー･フォンダ、ダーク・ボガード、フィリップ・ノワレと各国の有名俳優によって演じられていることも魅力のひとつとなっている。

帰国を命じられた在仏ソ連大使館武官がパリ空港警察に亡命を求めてくるところから物語は開始される。その武官が実はＫＧＢの大物スパイであり、西側政府に潜り込ませたソ連スパイリストを持参していると称したことから米国をはじめ西側諸国を巻き込む大騒動となって行く。時を同じくしてリストに上がっている容疑者が次々と謎の死を遂げて行き、果たしてリストは本物か、武官の目的は何か、さらにその背後に動く謎の人物は誰かなど、サスペンスの道具立てが見事に組み合わされ、最後まで飽きさせずに緊張感を持続させることに成功している。最近の映画に多い派手な立ち回りではなく、静かな会話によって緊張感を作り出すことが出来た時代の貴重な遺産とも言える。

　時は東西冷戦まっただなか、スパイが横行するヨーロッパ。

　とあるフランスのロシア大使館員（ユル・ブリンナー）が帰国直前にアメリカへの亡命を希望して、空港のフランス警察へ飛び込むことから物語は始まります。彼の亡命の目的は？二重スパイの可能性は？ＣＩＡ本部での取調べの後、彼は十数人のロシア側のスパイリストを提出します。が、そのリストに載った人物が次々と自殺に見せかけて殺されていきます。口封じのための殺人か、それとも？
　ここで驚いたのは科学技術の進歩の早さです。ＣＩＡの最新設備がいろいろ紹介されますが、コンピューターはなんと、パンチカード使用！時代を感じました。
　また、舞台がフランスからアメリカへ、人物もロシア人、フランス人、イギリス人、アメリカ、ドイツ人と出てきますので、多言語が楽しめます。
