　最初のうちは、主人公の便秘がひどくなっていくだけのストーリーで、先の展開が心配された。やたらと非現実的な場面が繰り広げられ、ファンタジーかと思いきや、最後は現実に戻る（かなりの非現実性はあるが）。「ヤラレタ」という感じ。
　展開もおもしろいが、ホッとする結末が心地よい。
　かなりの秀作。

私は主人公が誰をモデルにして書かれているかあとがきを読むまで、恥ずかしながら気づきませんでした。ストーリーは『インザプール』、『空中ブランコ』でもみられるように、最後にこういうことかと納得する部分があったり、最後まで不思議な部分もあり、あっという間に読めてしまう本でした。日本のお盆と重なって、主人公ジョンの昔関わった人（もう死んでしまっている人々）が次々に登場し、生前に果たせなかったこと、または、ずっと気にかけていたことをその人々ともう一度森の中で出会うことで晴らしていくというストーリー展開です。不思議な感じのストーリーですが、一度読み始めると止まりません♪

5.0 out of 5 stars もっと評価されてもいい、素晴らしい作品, 2006/4/1
すでに死んだ人、あの世の人との交流を
モチーフにした作品には傑作が多い。

それはおそらく、
「死」というものを見つめる分だけ、
現在の「人生」について深く見つめるからだろう。
ディケンズの「クリスマス・キャロル」などはその代表だが、
この本もそうした系譜にある作品だと言えるだろう。

他の奥田作品に比べてあまり注目されていない本書だが、
私などは、「邪魔」「最悪」の後にこの本を読んで、
著者の懐の深さに瞠目した。

主人公ジョンが自分自身の魂を見つめ、
再生していく姿には素直に共感できたし、
深い感動を覚えた。

この人は、ほんとうに人間を描くのがうまい。
「イン・ザ・プール」「空中ブランコ」に感動した人なら、
きっとこの本も楽しめるはず。

もっと評価されてもいいまっすぐな作品。
