イランはつくづく、興味深い国だと思う。

歴史ある大国であり、高度な文化を持ちながら、なかなか近代化が進まない。
アラブ人の宗教であるイスラム教を受け入れながらも、アラブ人に対して文化的な優越感や敵対心を持つ。
自ら進んで征服活動を行ったことはほとんどなく、世界史的に見ても非常に穏健な民族だと言えるほどなのに、なぜか現在、もっとも危険な国の一つと見なされている・・・。

そんな不思議さを痛感させてくれるのが本書だ。

本書はイランの歴史や文化をさらっと紹介しつつ、主に近代から現代のイランの国内情勢と国際関係の推移を追っていくもの。
ちょっと前の本ではあるが、単なる現状分析だけでなく深い洞察に基づいているため、どう状況が転んでも参考になる本ではあるだろう。

ただ、氏の他の本も読んだことのある人間としては、あらゆるテーマをとにかく駆け足で表面的に紹介していくという感じで、あまり深みが感じられないのが残念だった。
手軽にイラン情勢の基礎知識を身につけたい人向きかと。

　近年世界の注目が再び集まりつつあるイラン。
　近代以前には豪華絢爛な文化を花開かせ、近代でもイラン革命などで世界史上の稀有な事件を見せるイラン。今日ではアフマディネジャド政権によるアメリカ･イスラエルとの関係が問題となっている。日本にとっても有数の石油輸入国であり、決して遠くの無関係な国ではない。
　本書は、中東研究の第一人者が、このイランという国について正しい歴史的･地理的な知識と理解を示してくれる。イランの人の見方や考え方が見えてくる、有益な一冊である。

歴史から入ってるから、盛りだくさんではある。まとまりに欠いた点もある。それでも、アフマディネジャドの統治するイランの現状がわかる。まず、驚いたのが革命防衛隊なる第二軍隊（言葉は悪いがドイツの武装SS)のようなものがアフマディネジャドの出身母体だけあって、主要閣僚や国との契約に経済活動してる防衛隊企業を優先契約させているという、訳わからん身内重用主義があったということ。また、経済は　失敗しており、失業率は相当数に及ぶという。

一方、アフガンに向かうと、スンナ派のタリバンとシーア派のイランの関係は最悪だった。そんなわけで、アメリカはイランの一定の支援を得られた。今のイラク戦争でも一番過激派スンナ派を取り締まってくれているので、イランは歓迎している。なんか、同じ過激イスラム同士だし、仲いいんじゃないと思ったら、宗派の壁は鉄の壁なのね。

そんなわけでなぞに包まれていた革命防衛隊、こんがらがってたイランを中心とした国際関係（特にアフガン、サウジ、インド、パキ）は本書で比較的わかりました。でも、本書は国防総省がイランの核施設にバンカーバスター爆撃を提案したとか、今にもアメリカがイランと開戦するみたいな著者の見たては気になりました。イラクでそれどころじゃないと思うけど。
