著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

新田 次郎
1912(明治45)年、長野県上諏訪生れ。無線電信講習所を卒業後、中央気象台に就職し、富士山測候所勤務等を経験する。’56(昭和31)年『強力伝』で直木賞を受賞。『縦走路』『孤高の人』『八甲田山死の彷徨』など山岳小説の分野を拓く。次いで歴史小説にも力を注ぎ、’74年『武田信玄』等で吉川英治賞を受ける。’80年、心筋梗塞で急逝(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

スイスに行こうと思い色々調べていたら、この本に出会いました。新田さんの本はかなり昔に読んだことがありますが、この本は初めてです。昭和36年に新田さんが始めてアルプスに行った当時の話ですが、古さを感じませんでした。それは自然の時間から見れば、我々人間の高々数十年は大した違いはないからだと思います。

新田さん自身が、初めてのアルプスにとてもわくわくしながら旅しています。そしてスイス側・フランス側・イタリア側のそれぞれで感じたことを、素直に記録しています。また、風土と人間の密接な関係・生活について、私達に考えるきっかけを与えてくれます。

本人の希望で、アイガーの見える場所に新田さんのお墓はあります。素晴らしい眺望のところでした。この本を行く前に一度読んで、帰ってからもう一度読みました。両方楽しめました。

新田次郎氏が昭和36年に初めてアルプス３ヶ月間の旅に出かけたときの紀行文です。
スイス旅行の予習として読みましたが，ちょっとコミカルだったりシニカルだったりして楽しかったです。
また，この本で，マッターホルン初登攀時の悲劇を知り，
旅行先では，転落死した登山家の遺品等が展示されている山岳博物館や，遭難者のお墓を
興味深く見学することができました。
新田氏が訪問したころと違って，
山岳博物館はマッターホルンの形をしたガラス張りのミュージアムとなり，
入場料も１フランから１０フランへと値上げされていましたが，
街の構造やホテルの場所，マッターホルンの撮影スポットは変わりなく，
スイスに悠々とした時が流れているのを感じました。
新田氏が本書の最後の方で，スイスの美しさは，自然任せではなく，
人が作った牧草地，村々，教会などを含めた美しさだ，と書いていますが，
私もそう思いました。
白黒ですが古い写真がたくさん載っており，旅情満点です。

　新田次郎という小説家あっての紀行文。
今までのかれの山岳小説に登場した本場アルプスに実際に筆者が行って接する様々な人や自然が筆者の筆で表現されている。
　普段、紀行文はほとんど読まないので新田次郎の本というだけで買ったがハズレではなかった。
　２回読もうとは思わないけど・・・。
