1973年、時代の寵児であったボウイが、アメリカでの体験や印象からインスパイアされて（タイトルは「a land insaine」から「alladin sane」になった）作った、ボウイの作品の中でも煌びやかで最もロックンロール色が強い傑作。

時代の主役たる輝きと勢いが音とアートワーク（紙ジャケで持ちたい！）にしっかり現れているし、それは今聴いても全く色褪せてなく普遍的な輝きを放ち続けている。
ツアーの勢いで作ったのでバンドとの息もぴったりで、ストーンズの「夜をぶっとばせ」の性急な感じなど完全にオリジナルを凌駕している。

個人的な肝は新加入のマイク・ガースンのピアノ。表題曲のピアノソロなんか、全てのロックのピアノ演奏のなかで一番カッコいいと思う。

　本作発売と同時期（１９７３）に、高校２年生の金欠時期にもかかわらずアメリカツァーの海賊盤を高額で購入（＾＾；；しました。本作からの曲を主体にした構成で狂喜乱舞して聞いていた記憶がある。ミックロンソンのギターが艶かしくてさぁ・・・。前作で自分の立ち位置を世界に確立して自信満々で望んだWorldTourの勢いのまんまに全米各地のスタジオで早々にまとめ上げた感じはあるのだが、それが非常な緊張感を持って伝わっている。（ZEPの２ndみたいですね。）ジーンジニーのリズムギターなんて最初のコーラスの前に一小節早く刻み出しちゃってる！！ようなミスも「いいじゃん、いいじゃん時間無いし。」のような豪快なノリである。

１曲目から最後まで一気に聴かせる曲の配置、構成はバラバラなようだが見事。ﾜｲﾙﾄﾞなギターも最高だが、当時タイトル曲のピアノソロを聴いて引っくり返った思い出がある。今聞いても変わらない。この破壊的だが中近東風ソロは３０年経っても脳味噌に染入る。恐らくワンテイクだろうし、ボウイも即OKを出したに違いない。お行儀の良い音楽教育を受けてきたピアノ弾きには弾けないな、きっと。最終曲のバラードは秀逸！何はともあれデビッド・ボウイの最高傑作はこれと断言する。

「ジギー・スターダスト 」（1972年）の欧州、日本での成功に比べ、アメリカでは評価が低かったボウイーが、アメリカでの成功の為、アメリカで受けるアルバム作りへと傾倒していく。
そして、２０世紀アメリカの退廃的イメージをジャズを取り入れ「アラジン・セイン」（1973年）
このアルバムでは、２０世紀初頭のジャズ的なアプローチを全面的に打ち出す。
近年の「リアリティー・ツアー」にも参加した「ガーソン」のピアノが、退廃的に不協に響くのである。
特に、「ザ・ローリング・ストーンズ」の「夜をぶっとばせ」のカバーでは、オリジナルのストーンズよりアグレッシブにスピード感あふれた楽曲に仕上がっている。
その後、「ピンナップス」（1973年）「ダイアモンドの犬 」（1974年）「ヤング・アメリカン」（1975年） では、徐々にファンクに傾倒し「ジョン・レノン」や「デビット・サンボーン」「ルーサー・バンドロス」らと共演、アメリカで爆発的な人気を得る事になる。
しかし、アメリカで自身が金と名声の為だけに、活動してる状況に疑問を呈し、欧州人だと自覚して「ステイション・トゥ・ステイション」（1976年） を、発表。
そして、当時、冷戦で壁で引き裂かれた街ベルリンに移住し、商業的には失敗だが、名作「ベルリン３部作」を、発表していくのである。
