アナシンは神
父さんはアナシンと呼ばれていたらしい
ええ？神だって　だったら僕は神の息子ってこと？
　そうだよ
ならなぜ神らしいことできないの
　兄弟がみんな持っていちゃったからさ
僕には兄弟はいないよ
　いるんだよ

そして、兄弟と連絡する方法は蜘蛛に頼むことだと教わる。
チャーリーは神はみんなお人よしだと思ったか、いや何も考えず
兄弟に会いたいと蜘蛛に頼んでしまった。
のちに兄弟：スパイダーを自分の前から消してくれと願うとも知らずに。

スパイダーはチャーリー以外にはチャーリーに見えるらしい、それもものすごくカッコのいい
女たちは彼の香りでいちころ。おっとチャーリーの婚約者まで・・・

気のきいた会話の連続・訳者の金原さんは言葉の選び方に大分苦労されたのではないでしょうか。
さて、下巻ではチャーリーはスパイダーに勝てるのだろうか。

上下纏めて扱う．幻想小説とのことで期待したが，裏切られた．幽霊やこの世の始めなどが現実と共存して語られるが，およそ洗練からは遠く，殆ど下品に近い．さらに前半(訳書の上巻)のつまらなさは異常で，ここで投出したくなる．後半話は進行を始め好調に大詰めを迎えるが，余りにご都合主義的で安易だし，決して上品にはならない．更に邦訳では肝心な箇所で二人の若い女性 Rosy と Daisy の誤植かと思われる取り違いがあって，しらける．どうしてこの作品がイギリスの幻想文学賞を取ったのか，最後まで納得できなかった．
