「アップルシード」といえば士郎正宗、士郎正宗といえば「アップルシード」！　マイナーの中のメジャーともいえる人気作家の代表作品です。第１巻~第４巻、およびスペシャル版２冊が刊行されていますが、未完です。続刊の発売が待たれるところです。

えーと、たしか今から３００年近く未来のお話です。いくつかの戦争を経た後の世界。巨大な人口島、オリュンポスに作られた理想郷都市。そこはバイオロイドやサイボーグ、そして人間たちが暮らす新しい世界。警察の特殊部隊員である主人公、デュナン・ナッツ（女性・２３歳）と、彼女の公私共に渡るパートナーであるブリアレオス（男性・３２歳、サイボーグ）の活躍、そして彼らの暮らす世界のあり方を描き出すアクション＆社会派（？）ＳＦマンガです。

!１巻はまだまだ出だしという感じで、２巻以降に主題が強く表われてくる、と思います。十年以上前に始まったシリーズですが、現在のクローン技術、バイオエシックスなどにも関わってくるストーリーです。

ヒトとは？　生命とは？　そして理想郷・オリュンポスの謎とは？

というのは今後明らかになるのでしょう。ちなみにオリュンポスはヨーロッパ方面に位置する設定ですが、日本もしっかり主要国として登場してきます！

アクションあり、笑いあり、涙あり。登場人物たちがそれぞれ個性的で、魅力あります。緻密な描写がスバラシイ！

知的快感の得られるマンガだと思いますが、難しいことを抜きにしても、ノリだけでも楽しめると思います。メカ好きの方、兵器マニアの方、可愛い女の子好きの方、ぜひお読みください。

5.0 out of 5 stars ■近未来の「士郎正宗ワールド」、人間の行き着く先と生きる理由を探る, 2006/8/8
精細で緻密な世界設定とそれを十二分に反映した芸術的なまでの書き込み、躍動感・スピード感あふれるダイナミックな動きを見せる描写でワールドワイドな支持を集めている士郎正宗氏の代表作として「攻殻機動隊」と共に有名な作品。戦争で勢力地図がごちゃごちゃになった近未来で、マインドセットがなされた人間とアンドロイドの主人公二人組が、人間世界を正しい方向にコントロールしようとする遺伝子操作で生み出された理想的生物とされているバイオロイドが支配するパラダイスこと「オリュンポス」で活躍する物語が描かれている。

狭い視野で見ると主人公らの治安維持活動を通じた刑事アクションドラマだが、それらを通じた人間の行動心理、固有の思いによって生じる「ぶれ」とそのぶれが無いバイオロイドたちとの葛藤が何を生み出すのかという問題定義、科学が進歩し見た目には理想郷として存在を続けるオリュンポス内でもさまざまな勢力がせめぎあい「ゆらぎ」の中で右往左往しながら「存在そのものを努力しつつ続けている」ありさまがうかがいしれて興味深い。

士郎正宗氏のライフワークに近い作品でもあり、1巻2巻ではまだ柔らかさやギャクタッチがあちこちに見受けられるが、巻が進むにつれて描写の決め細やかさが推し進められていく様も見受けられる。

同氏の描写「技術」が変わり、世界情勢も劇的に変化してしまったため続編を望むのは難しいかもしれないが、あくまでも「データブック」に記載されている設定を貫いたまま話を進めてほしいものだ。

ちなみにタイトルは直訳すると「りんごの種」。アメリカの童話に「ジョニー・アップルシード」という話もある程度ヒントになっていると思われる。もちろん聖書の「アダムとイブが食べたりんごの逸話」も合わせて読んだ上で当書を読むと、色々考えさせられるところがあるだろう。

最初に漫画を読んだのですが、いきなり士郎の世界に放り込まれた感じで、なかなかなじめませんでした。
そこで、少し参考になればと思い映画を観ました。
その後漫画に戻ってみると、わかるわかる。
映画は、漫画とだいぶ内容が違ってますが、大変参考になります。
難解な漫画だと思っている人、映画を観ることをお勧めします。
