   彼の最高傑作といわれる73年の『赤心の歌』は、シンプルな弾き語りをメインにしたものである。一方こちらのファーストアルバムは、多種多様な曲を彼流の新しいアイディアで料理した、非常にバラエティに富んだ内容の傑作だ。ニルソンの<4>、トラフィックの<5>、プレスリーで有名な<8>、アイザック・ヘイズ作のファンキーな<9>などが収められている。（麻路 稔）

　ジャケットはすごく有名で、ロックを聴き始めた子供の頃から存在だけは知っていた。だが、聴くのは今回が初めて。で、その感想ですが…
　んー、なんと評したらいいのだろう、才能（アイデア）がありすぎたんだろうか、音楽として、結構いい瞬間が何回となく現出しているにも関わらず、冒頭の女性の馬鹿笑いから始まって、コケコッコーその他、意味不明のサウンドコラージュなどで、全体の印象がとっちらかって、散漫な後味ばかりが残る。
　個人的には、トラフィックの曲をドン・エリス・オーケストラと料理した「カラード・レイン」と、ハモンド・オルガンのシュールでアヴァンギャルドなソロ「月面軟着陸」（ジミヘンのエレクトリック・レディランドを思い起こす）が一番の傑作と聞こえる。この２曲の線でまとめあげれていれば、本物の「名盤」になったであろうに…惜しい。
　二番手が、「アイ・スタンド・アローン」「ワン」「ライト・ナウ」といったところか。
　ロック史的に有名な盤だからといって安易に手を伸ばすと、ガッカリするかも。

アル・クーパーのソロ・ファースト・アルバムである。アル・クーパーはボブ・ディランのセッション・ミュージシャンとして世に出た。ブルース・プロジェクト、ブラッド・スウェット＆ティアーズなどに参加し、ローリング・ストーンズやジミ・ヘンドリックスとも競演。そういう経歴を持つアルの音楽は、一つのジャンルに絞れない音楽の多様性を特徴としている。このアルバムはいきなり、人の笑い声で始まり、叫び声、シュプレヒコール、そしてオーケストラという具合に自由自在の”音”を操る彼の真骨頂が示される。又、ジャケット・デザインも印象的で彼の才能を示している。そういう優れた才能を持つ彼が、商業的なセールスで成功しているとは言いがたいのは、彼自身のヴォーカルの弱さ、そしてヒット曲の持つ親しみやすいメロディが不足しているのだと思う。このアルバムは６９年に発表されている。この頃はロック音楽が若者文化の中心になってきた時代で、そういう時代性は感じられる作品である。とっつきやすい作品とは言い難いが時代を感じたい人にはお薦めできる。

当時は情報がタイムリーに日本に伝わっていなくって、突然アル・クーパーなる人物が「フィルモアの奇跡」というアルバムで登場してくる。そして洪水のように過去のブルース・プロジェクト、ＢＳ＆Ｔなるスーパーバンドのレコードも発売される。「なんやこれ！」って思っていたら、リーダー格アーティストのソロ名義の登場。もうめまぐるしくいっぱい出てくるので消化不良気味で聞いた覚えがある。この人の世界というのは何だったのでしょうね？？今から考えたら摩訶不思議な人物だったような気がします。懐が深いというか、いろんなエッセンスが散りばめられていて、なんか聞いているうちに聞き込んでいるいいアルバムです。それとなんと言ってもジャケットが目立ちます。一番目立ったのではないでしょうか？「Ｉ　ＳＴＡＮＤ　ＡＬＯＮＥ」というタイトルも良かったと思いますね。
