　むかし（３０年くらい前だったか）、レコード時代にコロムビアより、ほぼ同じ布陣で２枚組朗読復刻がでたことがありました。与謝野晶子のほとんど巫女さんのような神がかった朗読の迫力や、白秋の独特の間合いの取り方、斎藤茂吉の、東北なまりの訥々とした朗読、萩原朔太郎の鬼気迫る声・・・など、そのときにはじめて聞き、９８年ＣＤ化されたときは本当に嬉しかったです。
　ただ、そのとき残念だったのは、レコードのときには収録されていた、坪内逍遙自身の訳・朗読による「ハムレット」一節が収録されていないと言うことでした。
　逍遙は、いま流行りの日本語の朗読について、文学者として最初に本格的に朗読法を研究したひとでしたし、明治末には、その玄人の歌舞伎役者を思わせる声色で、早稲田の授業に出席していた正宗白鳥や近松秋江などを魅了してしまったひとでした。その、伝説の声色がここに復活している!という、かつてレコードを聴いたときの興奮を思い出すにつけ、それを省略してしまっているＣＤ版への不満はいかんともしがたかったのですが、３０年ぶりに、（オリジナルからすれば７０年以上にはなるでしょうか）ついに、出るんですね！

北原白秋の読む擬音語がおもしろい。

　　『神父さん』トントン。

ハムレットの恋人オフィリアの台詞を、まるで歌舞伎の女形の声色（こわいろ）そのままの調子で読む坪内逍遥も、じつに興味深い。

与謝野晶子の朗読が、期待に反して、おそろしく一本調子だったのには驚いた。声の上げ下げの場所が、どの歌も全部おなじなのだ。短歌の詠み方には、古くから独特の慣習があって、その枠から外れるわけにいかないのだろうか。

萩原朔太郎の朗読は、棒読みそのものだった。ところどころ、読み落としている語句さえある。

ふと思った。こんにち私たちが、朗読の典型的イメージとして想起する、NHKのアナウンサーやベテラン俳優の、あの声の調子は、比較的最近になって確立した、一種の様式なのだろうか？

今日ちまたでは、ポエトリー・リーディングとか「詩のボクシング」など、従来の詩の朗読の枠を越えて、ライブ・パフォーマンスとして詩を発表する場が増えている。でも、偉大な作者本人が読んでくれるなら、たとえどんなにたどたどしい読み方でも、つい聞き入ってしまう。やはりテクニックがすべてではない。
