佐藤 ちひろ
北欧クラフト作家。スウェーデンの児童文学者アストリッド・リンドグレーンの影響を受け、幼少より北欧に強い憧れを抱く。1993年、デンマーク・スカルス手工芸学校に留学、手工芸全般を学ぶ。99年に帰国後、カルチャースクールなどでデンマークの小箱・エスカや刺しゅうを教える。現在「アトリエ・エスカ」を主宰し、テレビ、雑誌、個展などで作品を発表している(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

刺繍初心者の私にとっては、前作＆これは教科書のような感じです。小物や動物が多かった前作に比べ、作品の幅が広がったと思います。風景を取り入れた大きな作品が作れるようになります。ですから、デザインだけを取り上げたら、前作のほうが良いと思う人がいるのも分かります。
刺繍はしたいけど、何にしたら良いのか分からない・・・そんな時、今回の本にはブックカバーなどの小物の作り方まで乗っているので、目的を持ってさせると思いました。また、テクニック的にも一歩進んだ作り（糸の色替えとか）のモノが多いと思いました。個人的にデザインは前作のほうが好きです。でも刺繍の教科書として捉えるとすれば、二冊そろえて私は良かったと思っています。

今回も、植物や動物など身近な物をモチーフとした可愛い刺繍が、３０点程掲載されています。ステッチも簡単な物が多く刺繍自体も小さいものが多いので、刺繍が全く初めてという方でも刺すことができます。（刺し方の図解も分かりやすいです）中に数点、ニードルブックやピンクッション等の作り方も載っているので、自分で応用して可愛い小物も作れます。「ちいさな刺繍」を持っている方でも、買って損をすることはないと思います。

いろいろ刺繍本は見ましたたが、やはり佐藤さんの刺繍は群を抜いてセンスがいいです。
あまり難しいステッチを駆使しているわけではないのですが、図案と色のグラデーションや刺しの細かさは本を眺めているだけでも楽しい気分になります。

「やさしい刺繍」とはいっても易しいではなく優しい気持ちになる本だと私は思いました。
実際にその図案を刺しても全く及ばないだろうって仕事ぶり。
それに真似て刺したところで布がひきつれそうなほど面を埋めていくスタンプワークが多くて、素人には正直キツイです。
実際にハリネズミを真似てやってみましたがなぜかイノシシみたいになってしまいました･･･。
だから私はハウツー本としてではなく鑑賞用としておすすめします。

自分にしては高価な本ですが眺めているだけで幸せになれるので買ってよかったと感じています。
動物や果物がとてもかわいいのです。
動物にしろ果物にしろ、ブルーナ的な線を簡略化した可愛らしさではなく、ピーターラビットのような微妙にリアルさを残しつつ、佐藤さんの目を通して見た可愛さが加味されていて、自分にとってツボでした。
デンマーク時代のことも少し書いてあって、彼女が刺繍をする対象に感じる愛情とか作品からも文章からもわかります。
そのちょっとしたエッセイも短いながらも大人が求める「かわいらしさ」が滲み出ていて
とにかくカワイイ！本なのです。サイズもです。
カバンに入れて持ち歩けるのもポイント高いです。「ちいさな刺繍」（前作）も同じテイストです。
