書いていることは実に「まとも」で、それ自体は嫌いではない。

しかし、内容、構成、文体どれをとっても勢古浩爾の丸写しである。勢古の読者ならすぐにそのことに気づくはず。
文中では勢古を褒めちぎっているが、オマージュと呼ぶにはあまりに芸がなさ過ぎる。
タイトルも『こういう男になりたい』をもじったものであることが明白なのに、あとがきで「この本にふさわしい、ただひとつある書名」と語っている。
河合塾の先生らしいけど、一体何がしたいのか。

里中先生は私の恩師である。いつでも斜にかまえた体で教壇の椅子に座り
醒めた口元から発せられる、聞いたこともないような知識、教養の数々は
「英語の授業」というものを越えて、高校を出たものの肩書きもなく、
悶々とする浪人生の心を熱く満たしたものだ。

当時、まだ３０代半ばであっただろう彼の言葉でいまでも憶えているのが
「健康で頭もしっかりしていられるのはせいぜい６０代後半までだろう。
そう考えると、もう人生の半分以上を生きたことになる。サウナに入りながら
ふとそんなことを考えたら、空恐ろしくなってきた」という言葉だ。
彼のニヒリスティックな自意識をあらわしているとともに、おそらくは
老いることへの不安と怖れという彼の本音をも含んでいたと思われる。

そんなことを時々思い出していたから、この本が出たとき、40をとうに超え
50の声を聞こうかという彼がどんなことを考えているのやらと興味深く読んだ。
他の評者（おそらくその評者は私と河合塾の同期ではないか）も言うように
どちらかというとリベラルな教養や本を授業の中で紹介していたという印象のある
氏が、福田恒存や曽野綾子の文章を援用しつつ、「『まとも』とは教養と平衡感覚であり
手堅くまともに生きようとしたら、どうしても保守的な構えをとらざるをえない」
と書くのには、正直に言って違和感を覚えたのは事実である。

もちろん、福田恒存は「正しい」思想家であるし、平衡感覚をもって生きることが
そうでない生き方より「まっとう」であることは間違いがないだろう。
だが、いつでもすました顔をしながら斜め４５度を向いていた先生が、
「正面を向く」ようになってしまったことに対する、何となく複雑な気持ちはある。

暑い盛りの日、教室に入るなり「帝国主義的な暑さですねぇ」などとと言いながら
ニヤリと口元を緩める先生の顔が好きだった。
あの暑かった夏の日は、すでに遥かな日溜りのように懐かしく、そして遠い。

４０歳＝不惑なんて一体誰が考えたやら。

本書冒頭里中氏の４０過ぎても「ワクワクしっぱなし」、はドキドキワクワクの「ワクワク」じゃなく「惑惑」だったって。噴き出してしまいました。

全編通して著者の思う「まともな男」像を追い求めますが最後は労働者であり哲学者であったエリック・ホッファー登場！「惑惑」ぶりもここに極まれりなのですが、ぼくも他人のことは言えない。

みんなそうなんだあ、とある意味安心できる本。
