子供時代に読んだ本の中で忘れられない一冊です。　情けないけどユーモラスなおじさんと一緒に暮らす少年の日常生活をユーモラスに描いたお話。これは、斉藤茂吉氏一族がモデルとなっており、作者の北杜夫氏自身が『おじさん』のモデルになっている話だと知ったのは、ずっとあとで大人になってからでした。　有名作家が著した児童書だけに、文章は流れるように美しく、また読者を引き込む魅力に溢れています。小学生のわたしも飽きずに一気に読んだ記憶があります。　その後、子供心にも強い影響を受け、ユーモア溢れる作文を試みて周囲に褒められるなどした思い出もあります。　良書のひとつだと思います。

最近、「トリス」のＴＶＣＭが復活したが、この北杜夫の小説「ぼくのおじさん」にも、「三角ウイスキー」なる、トリスウイスキーをモデルにしたらしいウイスキーが出てくる。この「三角ウイスキー」にも、トリスよろしく、ハワイ旅行が当選する懸賞が付いている。

このおじさんは「週に八時間だけ大学で働いている」うだつの上がらない学者崩れで、一つ外国にでも行けば見聞が広がって自分の存在価値もあがるに違いない、しかし、勉学で外国に行くのは息苦しいから遊学が良い。そうだ、外国旅行の懸賞に応募して世界一周をしてやろう、などと訳の分からないことを言って、ハワイ旅行の当たる「三角ウイスキー」を周囲に勧めまくる。それだけではない。家族の者に（おじさんは、兄家族の家に居候している）、ガムは鳥印フウセンガム、コーラは四ツ星コーラ、チョコレートは甘辛チョコレートしか買ってはいけないと言い聞かせ、本人もなけなしの貯金をはたいて、食べて飲みまくる。いずれも、一等に当選すると、ハワイや南米やヨーロッパに行けるからだ。

このおじさん、若かりし頃の作者がモデルなのだそうだ。確かに、自伝的要素の強い「どくとるマンボウ医局記」にも、お見合いやら居候のことやら、似たようなエピソードがたくさん出てきていた。愉快だろうが、近くにいると、楽しい以上に実害も多そうなおじさんである。さて、このおじさんの外国旅行は果たして叶うのか。それは、読んでのお楽しみ。私も、一度でいいから懸賞に当たって海外旅行をしてみたい。

「ぼく」のお父さんの弟、つまりおじさんは居候。少年野球のピッチャーをやれば打たれ、それをキャッチャーのせいにしたり、「ぼく」に漫画を買ってこいとお使いを申し付けたと思ったら「お前も読みたいんなら半分払え」とのたまわる…。このおじさんのはちゃめちゃぶりがとにかく笑えます。大人だけでなく、子どもから見ても「しっかりしろよー」と言いたくなるような行動。
また、和田誠さんのグウタラでゴーインングマイウェイのおじさんの絵も、とても気に入っています。児童書ですが、わたしの大好きな本です。
ただし、ツボにはいるとあぶないので、電車の中では読まないほうがいいかもしれません。
