書店でタイトルを見てから、ずっと気になっていました。役所が主導するとなり町との戦争・・設定としては抜群におもしろいと思います。

「となり町との戦争」というのが何なのかハッキリと書かれていませんが、どうやら本当の「戦争」のようで、実際多くの人が死んでいきます。しかし殺し合いのシーンなどは全くなく、まるで道路工事か何かのように淡々とした、お役所的事務作業の描写が中心です。そのため、とても奇妙な読後感が残りました。

個人的な解釈ですが、著者は暴力的なシーンを省くことで「戦争の本質」を描きたかったのではないかと思います。ですがそこらへんの説得力には乏しく、心に響くところは少なかったです。

書評を読んだ記憶がないので、タイトルと表紙に惹かれて購入したのだと思いますが、なぜだかマジック・リアリズムのような先入観を持っていました。読後の印象として残っているのは全体の意匠にはうなずけるものの、後半になってますます鼻につく手垢のついたような、こういう作品のなかば慣用表現と化した言葉遣いです。「香西さん」の人物造形もいかにもという感じで、彼女の描写が出てくるたびにゲンナリしてしまいました。文庫に入っているサイド・ストーリーも蛇足の印象を拭えません。狙いすぎの作者の意図がすばる文学賞をもたらしてくれはしたけれど、そのあたりを嫌う読者も多いのでは？

他のレビューでも指摘されているように、後味が悪い感じのするお話でした。
でも、作者はそういう漠然とした不快感を与えるのを狙っているような気がするので、
そういう意味では成功しています。
私は読後に割り切れない気分になる本が好きではないので評価が低くなりましたが、
これは好みの問題かと。
着想や設定は面白いので、もう少し明るい展開だったら良かったのになーと
個人的には思います。
