著者はお茶の水女子大名誉教授の言語学者。本書は勉強にかかわる３８篇のエッセーから成る。初出は１９９６年４月から２０００年４月の雑誌「合格レーダー」（生憎知らないが）。著者は１９２３年生まれだから、７３歳から７７歳にかけて書かれたエッセーということになる。

文章は平易で読みやすい。しかし、内容の質は高く含蓄がある。また、具体例が豊富で、"serendipity"（偶然の発見）の挿話(p130、科学者などが実験中に思わぬ発見をすること)やプラシーボ効果（p171、偽薬効果ー例えば、ただの砂糖水であっても妙薬だといわれ信じて服用すると効果があったりすること)の話などはいずれも興味深い。それぞれの内容は難しいことではないが、その由来や正確な呼称を私は知らなかった。

｢三つのことば｣というエッセーでは、日常使用するアルファー語、物語や小説のベーター語、論理的なガンマー語の3種に分け、勉強するとはガンマー語を勉強することだと、至って判りやすい。体で覚える暗黙知と知識としての言語知のエッセーも示唆に富み、暗黙知を軽視してはならないとの指摘は文化評論でさえある。

本書の書名は、一見ノウハウ書のようであるが、実は内容は極めて濃い。私は食い入るように耽読してしまった。

すこしでも、外山さん考えを知ることができればと思い購入、通読。内容的には、思考の整理学と同じような形で、生きていく上で、少しで外山さんが感じた内容を知的に分析してその結果を解説してくれている。内容は「思考の整理学」とかぶる部分もありますが、「思考の整理学」を読んだ上でも、読み終わった後、充実感があります。小脳を利用しての勉強、頭の働かせ方の二種類の定義、脳への刷り込、小刻みに結果を出し脳に安心させるなど面白かったな。「思考の〜」も間違いなく面白かったけど、こっちも名作だと思います。日常生活からの問題定義能力、発見能力、それに対する抽象化、分析力、定義化の能力は尊敬するしかありません。脳の使い方が上手いのかな・・・少しでも見習いたい日々です。

身近なエピソードを平易な語り口でつづっているので文章が読みやすい．
それでいて，けっこう奥深い．
氏の文章が，小学校や中学校の国語の題材に選ばれるのはよくわかる．
小学生を持つ親は読むとよい．

興味を引いた例
・ある学校での時間割をなくした試み．
・立って仕事をすると効率がよいということを著者が聞いて，
　それを実践した顛末．

・２つのグループに本を書き写す作業をさせた．
　一つは，背筋を伸ばして正しい姿勢で作業した人たちのグループ．
　もう一つは，猫背で作業した人たちのグループ．
　さて，作業効率が高かったのはどっち．
