タイトルとおり、いろんな自動車が作者独特の細かい描写で表現されています。息子は、数多くの絵本の中でも、この絵本が一番のお気に入りで、１歳児の頃から何度も何度も見ています。言葉が話せるようになってからは、すべての自動車の種類を覚えて、街で走るクルマを指差しては、トラックだ、タンクローリーだと叫んでいます。男の子は、なぜかクルマが大好きなので、お友達へのプレゼントにもオススメです。子供が多く集まるところにこの絵本をもっていくと、男の子の間で取り合いになってしまう人気です。

レトロな感じの車がその名のとおり並んでいる図鑑ですが、これがまた車好きの息子の大のお気に入りの1冊です。読むところがないのに、読んでと毎日持ってきます。車の名前を私がいうと、うんうんとうなずきながらじ-っと見ています。まだもうすぐ2歳になる息子には本のないようが分からないので、大好きな車がいっぱい出てきて、わかる言葉が出てくるというだけという絵本の方が楽しめるのかもしれません。特に気に入っているページはパン販売車が出てくるページで私にパンを指でつまむような仕草をして｢どうぞ｣と手を差し出します。ごっこ遊びにも一役かった絵本です。

この本には文字はありません。
今風のかわいらしい絵でもありません。
ひたすらまじめに書かれたらしき自動車たちが
４０台あまり。
白地のページに自動車ばかり。
でも、息子はこの本の大ファンです。
先日（平成１５年１月）、この車専門作家といってもよい絵本作家が
この世を去られたニュースを聞き、たくさんの小さなファンたちと

ともに悲しんでいます。
