For anyone searching for an informative yet not to high-brow introduction to Sado, O-Cha, Chado, Cha no yu, or whatever name you call what is commonly know outside of Japan, as simply the 'tea ceremony' look no further than this splendid publication. This really is a stunning example of the what the Japanese publishing world does best, simple, straightforward, detailed yet accessible this book offers the begin and established practitioner alike a wealth of 'extra' knowledge to complement their practice of the Way.
Besides detailing the obvious, i.e. 'ceremony' itself where this publication excels is in the encyclopaedic knowledge it extends to the reader in respect of taking each of the tools used in Cha-e and explaining the history, forms and materials in great depth.
Whether you read and understand the Japanese language or not should have no bearing on your decision to purchase this book, the illustrations and wonderful colour plates alone will convey to the reader of any level the sublime beauty and majesty of Cha no yu.
Incidentally, I know a good number of readers (myself among them) who have purchased Tanaka's 'Tea Ceremony' and found that whilst it is an intriguing lesson in the historical development, what it is sadly lacking is the 'nuts and bolts' of the Way which it seems loathed to impart, also the noticeable absence of colour plates is a big detraction. My opinion? Save yourself the 1000円 and but this book, you won't regret it.
