初めてこのの作品を手にしたのは、中学2年生の時だった。
母が昔読んでいたという、それだけの理由で何気なく手にしたのだった。
読み始めてまもなく、私はあっという間にこの物語の中にのめりこんでいった。
それまではあまり馴染みのない時代設定であったにもかかわらず、
この物語の魅力はそんなことをすっかり忘れさせ、私を引きずりこんだのだった。

そしてやってきた、物語のクライマックス。
あっというどんでん返しに、私の心は震えた。
そこには、人の本当の弱さ、強さが全て込められていたのだ。
私の世界は、その視点は、そこから一瞬にして角度を変えたといっても
決して過言ではない。
私は読み終えた直後の、あまりにも強烈な余韻のために、眠れない朝を
迎えたことを憶えている。

　うすのろだけれども心やさしい・さぶと頭の回転の速い・栄二の二人の友情を綴る。また、栄二を通してさぶの心情も綴られている。
　途中まで題名は『栄二』の方が良かったのでは？と思うが、最後になってなぜ題名が『さぶ』になったのか分かる、気持ちの良い作品。

　因みに、この本は祖母が母親に勧め、母親が私に勧めてくれた本です。まさに、代々伝わる本です。

　題名にもなっている「さぶ」は主人公ではありません。主人公は「さぶ」の同僚と言うか兄貴分である「栄二」です。
　しかし、やはりこの作品は「栄二」ではなく「さぶ」なのです。
　内容は簡単に言えば「栄二」が成長する過程の話。「さぶ」はあくまで脇役ではありますが、「栄二」にとっての「良心」であり、「手綱」のような存在です。
　何をやらせても人並み以上には出来ない「さぶ」ですが、人にはまねの出来ないような真っ正直で、どこまでも「栄二」を信じる心には、ひどく馬鹿らしいようで、この上なく感動的です。「栄二」の荒んだ心をほぐした「さぶ」の存在こそがこの小説におけるミソなのです。
　山本周五郎入門書としては最適なものなのではないでしょうか？
