ブレンダ・リーといえば、「この世の果てまで」の歌声を思い出しますが、この曲は、もともとスキータ・デイヴィスが1963年に歌って大ヒットした曲のカバーです。もっとも日本では、ブレンダ・リーの持ち歌として知られていますが。彼女の歌声は、とても甘く、伸びやかで、1度聴いたら忘れられない張りがあります。説得力のある声という感じがしました。

同様にトニー・ベネットの歌で有名なスタンダード・ナンバー「我が心のサンフランシスコ」も、ブレンダ・リーの歌唱の方が有名で馴染みがありますね。原曲は1954年にクララメ・ターナーによって歌われ、その後、多くの歌手によってカバーされました。現在でもよく聴かれていますのでスタンダード・ナンバーの名曲といえるでしょう。

彼女は1944年にジョージア州のアトランタで生まれ、6歳でデビューし、その頃「ダイナマイト」という曲を歌ったため、「リトル・ミス・ダイナマイト」と呼ばれました。10代で初のビルボード・アルバムチャートNo.1の記録を達成しています。デビュー当時は「ニュー・ジュディー・ガーランド」とも呼ばれたようです。そのくらい少女の頃から歌が上手かったのでしょう。

「モア」「好きにならずにいられない」「この胸のときめきを」「行かないで」「いそしぎ」「フライ・ミー・トゥ・ザ・ムーン」「バラ色の人生」等のスタンダードの名曲が収められており、その歌声は今聴いても魅力的です。1960年代のオールディーズには欠かせない歌手で、このような名歌手が時代と共に忘れ去られていくのが残念でなりません。

「この胸のときめきを」は、プレスリーとは違って、ブレンダリーだけのあのハスキーな声にピッタシ。愛の賛歌も越路吹雪とまた違っていいよ。まず聞いてください。
