『こころ』を読んだのは、中学生のとき以来だろうか。
そのときは、国語の授業の一環として語彙を暗記したり、
「ここで先生はなにを言いたかったのでしょうか」
といった類の意味（心理？）解釈を
定期テストの対策として勉強した覚えがある。
有名な作家で有名な作品。その他にはとりわけ印象には残らなかった。

日本の近代文学が何となく肌に合わなくて、食わず嫌いをしていたが、
今さらながら読んでみて、なぜ素通りしていたのだろうと思った。
同時に、中学生のときにわかるはずがないと思った。
いや、国語の学習教材としても使われて、
現時点で（恐らくこれからも）読んでもまた理解の仕方や感じ方が違う。
この作品が時代ごとに読みつがれている理由の一つだろうか。
今だと、漱石の上品な文体に感じ入るだけでなく、
ある程度理性的にも理解できる。

漱石は近代的な人間の内面を鋭く描写したという定式的な解釈がある。
それ自体は間違ったものではないとは思う。
だが、実際に読むと、漱石や先生はそういったところに入ったまま、
そういったところを突き抜けた地点で表現（解釈）するという
ある種の矛盾を両立させているように見える。すごく中立的に。
そのためだろうか。本書は重いテーマではあってもとても読みやすい。
深淵だけど寛容。奥深いが間口は広い。

『こころ』は岩波、新潮、角川、集英社と多くの出版社から出されている。
本屋では同時に手に取ってみて、紙質、字体、装丁、解説など
比べてみるのも楽しみの一つになる…かもしれない。

　約100年前に書かれた小説にも拘らず、21世紀のトレンディ・ドラマに匹敵する、むしろまったく古臭くならない日本語で書かれた名作中の名作。海外では、同性愛小説として読まれているそうだが、我々がシャーロック・ホームズとワトソン博士の同性愛を論じるのと、ここはいい勝負。とはいえ、何回も読んでいるが、今年、2007年は、集英社文庫のカバーに可愛い女御を使っているのがいい。「漱石といえば岩波書店」という時代はもう古く、何しろこの集英社文庫は活字が読みやすい。岩波文庫の活字は書体が古く、改版していないので、読みにくい。
　久しぶりに読み返して、新たな興奮と感動を得ることのできる芳醇な日本語の世界、巷の最近の中途半端な直木賞作家･芥川賞作家の作品より、はるかにいい。これが、300円そこそこで買えるなんて、日本人は幸せやと、隣の天下茶屋生まれの欧米人も叫んでいた、「欧米か!｣って。

作品内容はとても良いです。
なので表紙についてアドバイス。
各社から「こころ」は出ていますが、集英社刊行のはデスノートの小畑氏イラストのものがあります。
品切れ時、表紙には拘らないようです。
絵で集英社にしようと思っている方はご注意ください。
