　日本を始め、英国やトルコなど、梨木さんが訪ねた土地にまつわる思い出。執筆当時に起きた幼児殺害事件やイラク人質事件の報道と、それに対する国内世論の反応に接して考えたこと。こうした、梨木さんの身の回りで起きた“ぐるりのこと”について、心の奥から立ち上がってきた思いを綴ったエッセイ集です。季刊誌「考える人」2002年夏号から2004年秋号に掲載された八つのエッセイ。ふつふつとたぎる梨木さんの思いが、言葉によって解き放たれたような、そんな味わいがありました。

　初夏の午後、英国のセブンシスターズの断崖を、米国人の知人と散策した時の思い出を記した「境界を行き来する」。不思議な静けさに満ちた英国の黄昏のひとときを振り返りながら、梨木さんの思いは、“自分”と“境界の向こう側”とを繋いでいるものへと羽ばたいて行く。思索がふわりと飛翔し、自由に空を舞う風情に引き込まれました。

　また、日本人の国民性に思いをめぐらせたエッセイ「群れの境界から」の第二部には、とても共感させられました。ひとりの“個人”としての意識よりも、民族共同体としての“群れ”の意識を優先させる日本人の共同体意識について語った文章の、凛としてほとばしる力強いもの。何か圧倒されるような読みごたえを感じました。

　ところで、それぞれのエッセイの出だしと途中の言葉の何文字かが、他の文字と比べて太く、大きく印字されています。この大・太文字の所で、せっかくの話の流れが寸断される気がして、これはかなり違和感を覚えました。

梨木さんの本は大好きですが、どう好きかを上手く表現する事は難しいのです。それはきっと本を開いたときの、お話の中に込められている…とりまいている「空気」が好きだからなのではないかと思います。静かに凛と、ほの暖かい空気。そしてこちらのエッセイを読むと、どうして好きだったのかがもう少し形になりました。ちょっと小難しくてわからない所も、うなずけない所もありましたが、「考えるという事」や「日常を大切にする」事にあらためて思いをはせたりして、ちょっと人生を真面目に考えたくなりました。

彼女の日々考えていることを、つらつらとつづったエッセイ。こういうことをここまで深く考えているんだと、ちょっとびっくりしました。最近の時事問題についても率直に意見を述べられています。イスラム圏の女性に対する記述にははっとさせられました。
選ばれている題材のためなのか、私には小説よりも小難しく感じてしまいました。ただ、ここから梨木ワールドが生みだれると思うと、ちょっと読み方も変わってきそうです。
