　爺さんに捕らえられた狸が縄をほどいて婆さんを撲殺。狸は婆さんを解体して「ばあ汁」をこしらえ、だまして爺さんにそれを食べさせた。婆さんを喰ってしまった爺さんが嘆いていると、兎が敵をとってくれる。
　なるほど、そう言う訳で狸は兎になぶり殺されるのか。御伽草子に正確でない絵本は、「ばあ汁」くだりが外されているので、むしろ兎の陰湿さが際だっていたのだが、そうか、狸の非道さが裁かれていたのか。オリジナルに忠実であるべきですね。
　著者の小澤俊夫は昔話の本当の魅力を壊さないように現代語訳しています。その考え方は同じ出版社の、小澤俊夫再話、赤羽末吉画、日本の昔話一〜五巻（ISBN4834033155）の後書きにあります。興味を持たれた方は読んでみてください。
　挿絵は墨の下書きに顔料でサラッと描いてありヘタウマぽい感じで、好き嫌いがあると思いますが、私は日本の昔話には合っていて良いと思います。

かちかちやまのお話はかなり有名ですよね。でも本当の「かちかちやま」を知っていますか？こわい、こわい、とってもおそろしいお話です。たぬきは本当に悪い顔をしています。でもうさぎだって・・・。もう一度、手にとって読んで欲しい一冊。素晴らしい赤羽末吉さんの絵で、どうぞ！

この話は、「悪いことをするとバチがあたる」と子どもに教えるために作られたものだと思う。
しかし、おばあさんが死ぬ・ウサギがタヌキを溺死させるといった描写は最近ではおばあさん・タヌキは死なない設定になっている。どっちが本物なのだろう?。
