神戸文学賞でデビューした玉岡さんは、現代を生きる活発な関西の女の子、を描くのも
上手いが、「おんな紋」などで見せる「かつての兵庫に生きていた女性」を
スケール大きく描くのもとても上手だ。この「お家さん」は、大きな商家に嫁いだ
女性が、店を取り仕切り、やがて個人商店だった店は大きな商社となり、
海外にもその拠点を広げて…という一代記。日清・日露戦争の勝ちで勢いづく
太平洋戦争に打ちのめされる前の日本を舞台に、商売で世界と渡り合おうとする
たくましい男たちと、彼らを支え、ときには叱咤激励する女たちが皆
魅力的にたくましく描かれている。登場人物が多いのだが、どのキャラクターも
きちんとした輪郭を持って存在しており、読んだ者の中で1人の人間として
すっくと立ち上がって、話をして、動いている。まさに「活写」と呼びたい
イキイキとした筆致が魅力的な物語である。

明治・大正の時代、こんなにも人々が懸命に、真面目に、情熱をもって生きていたのか、という感動がひろがりました。相手を思う心、そしてそれに応えるしぐさや言葉。
私が読んでいて特に気を引いたのが、お家さんの元で働く珠喜の存在でした。好きな人を思い、黙って涙の溜まった瞳でお家さんを見つめ返す珠喜−選択しなければよい道を選び、長い苦しみを経て軌道の修正をするものの、関東大震災であっけなく愛する人を奪われてしまう−彼女の生き様に感情移入し、涙がこぼれ、そして自分のおろかさを懐かしみ、彼女の幸せに自分のことのように慈しみたくなる心境になりました。
著書は女性をとりまいて華やかに展開し、着物や紋に対する心配り、桃をめぐる比喩など、美しい箇所が随所に現れます。何より女性としての気持ちのあり方や自分を律する姿に美しさを感じずにおれませんでした。

上下巻一気に読みました。宮尾登美子が書いてもおかしくない題材です。
トヨタ、ソニーが世界を席巻した最初の日本の会社ではないことをしりました。

NHKがドラマ化してくれることを望みます。
