冬に出版される絵本の何冊かは、必ず雪が描かれています。

雪の白さは非日常的な世界を簡単に作り出せるし、
雪の寒さを利用して暖かさを際立たせる演出にもなります。
サンタ、ゆきだるま、など子供受けする役者の舞台としても使えます。

ある意味、雪の扱い方をみれば作家の力量が伺い知れるといえます。

そんな視点から本作品をみると、女の子の気持ちを、雪に託して
分かりやすく表現しているところにウマさを感じました。

ひとり布団の中で、風邪薬を買いに出かけた母親を待つ女の子。
突然降り出した吹雪は女の子の不安と重なり、積もりゆく雪は
母親を想う気持ちとみごとにシンクロしています。

他に注目点として述べたいのは、母親の顔をあえて見せなかったところ。
読者の意識が女の子からブレないようにすると共に、母親の存在感を
視覚的にでなく、心理的に伝える演出になってます。

大島さんの作品では　あかね書房刊『まいごのマイロ』でも
雪がうまく扱われていました。こちらもお勧めです。

風邪をひいてしまった女の子は、お母さんがお薬を買いに行く間一人でお留守番をすることに。
「だいじょうぶ　おともだち　いるもん」となかよしのお人形達とお布団で休むのですが、目が覚めてお母さんがいないことに気が付きます。
暗くて怖い・・おまけに外は吹雪！なかよしのお人形達といろいろあれこれおかあさんを心配する女の子はとうとう泣き出して・・。
「おふとんにはいってなきゃ」とお母さんはおっかなーい顔！なのにとってもうれしくてホッとする・・。
こんな気持ちって、ずっと昔自分も幼い頃にあったような・・。おかあさんがただいる、という幸福感。なんだか懐かしくて胸がキューンとなりました。

ちょっとらんぼうに冷蔵庫を閉める音
おかあさんの歩く音
うちの子供達も、私のそんな音に安心しているんだろうな・・。
ふと我が子を抱きしめたくなりました。
