実際にオーストリアで発生した「マリー・ヴェッツェラの遺骨」事件を縦軸、そのマリー・ヴェッツェラとハプスブルク家皇太子ルドルフとの情死の謎とルドルフ皇太子の生涯を横軸にして綴られたルポルタージュ。

著者も本文中で、もし皇太子が皇帝の座に就いていたなら、と書いている個所があるが、私ももし彼が心中の道を選ばず、老帝の死を待ち、また精神を病んでいなければ、ハプスブルクは絶えず、また多くの悲劇を生み出した２つの世界大戦も存在しなかったと思えてならない。

聡明な皇太子の悲劇の生涯が綴られた１冊、ハプスブルク家に興味のある方にはぜひとも読んで戴きたい。

暴かれた墓の遺骨検証から始まった「情死」を遂げた
ルドルフ皇太子の真相を探る。

タイトルや表紙には魅力がなかったのですが、一気に読んでしまい、
しかもルドルフ皇太子への興味がかきたてられる。
ルドルフについての描写は、
彼が大変素晴らしい人物だったことを教えてくれます。

２０世紀の皇帝に相応しい彼が、衰退してゆく帝国が
何故こんな風になっていくのか、関連の本を読み漁ってしまうきっかけになって非常に興味深い。
