　中二病。
　田原成貴という人間の人格を語るのにこれほどまでに相応しいことばはなかろう。
馬乗りとしてもいろんなことがあった、それからもまあ、いろんなことがあった。
　ただし、その人格の如何はさておき、少なくとも確かなのは、競馬を論理的に組み立て、
そして語ることにおいては、この男、かけがえのない逸材であるということ。

　そんな原作者の傑作。
　このマンガを読むことで馬券が獲れるようになるか、と問われれば、それは私の与り知らぬ
こと。あえて言えば、数学的には馬券など勝負を仕掛けたその時点で負けは決まっている。
　しかし、レースを見る目を養うため、スポーツとしての競馬の面白さを知るためには今なお
最適の入門書、それがこのマンガ。

　序盤はまだ、半ば現実からモチーフを取ったと思われる、下ネタ交じりのギャグまがいの
展開。モデルと推測される騎手たちも、その多くが既にステッキを置いていることに、時の
隔たりを感じさせる。
　しかし、巻を重ねるごとに、がらりとテイストを変え、競馬も、人間模様も、徐々にその
深みを増してゆく。
　もちろん、作画の土田世紀の技量もあっぱれ。

土田＋（連載開始当時、現役騎手だった）田原の“Ｗセイキのコンビ”による、門外漢（含むオレ）にも十分楽しめる競馬コミック。当初は月イチ連載（『ヤンマガ』）だったりしたこともあり、タイトルから想像される通りの読み切り風・連作ギャグ短編としてスタートしたものの、後に連載ペースが上がって行くのと機を一にするかのように、ムチャクチャ熱く、時に泣ける男たちのドラマとして、グングン盛り上がりをみせていった（この第１巻でも、その展開を予感させるエピソードを読むことはできる）。

また、チャランポランな二流ジョッキー・氷室が“一応、主人公”という位置から真の主人公へと変貌、成長を遂げてゆくさまも見もの。それも、ただ単純に成長して行くのではなく、ドツボ状態に落とされて!も、そこから何かをつかんで再起して来るところがよりリアルであり、それが胸に響いてくるのだ。個人的には、よくある自己啓発の本１００冊よりも、このコミックを読む方が得るものは大きいような気もする（いや、マジで）。

なお、ここ数年いろいろあったようだが、原作を担当した田原氏は現在、長年の経験を活かした予想サイト（会社）を立ち上げ、新たな道を歩み出している。
