本書は老人に対するハウ・ツーについて述べるのではなく、「老い」
についてごく短いコラムを書き、読者がそこから「老い」について
それぞれの考えを発展させていただくものにしたい（まえがき）

アイヌの人たちは老人の言うことがだんだんわかりにくくなると、
老人が神の世界に近づいて「神用語」を話すようになり、そのため
一般の人間にはわからなくなると考える、とのこと。
「ぼけはじめたな」と受け止めるより「とうとう神用語を話すよう
になった」と思うのとでは老人に接する態度は随分変わるだろう。
「神用語」という言葉を考えたアイヌの人たちの知恵の深さに我々
も学ぶべきである。（３０-「神用語」を話す）

１１０あるコラムにはグリムの話や臨死体験の話、ヒンドゥー教の
知恵の話など多岐に渡り、実に充実した本であります。
