貫戸朋子という医師の国際協力に対する考え方と、その苦悩が正直に書かれている。所属している組織である国境なき医師団という国際協力団体に対しても、率直な批判を行っており、特に今のところ欧米中心の視点に立った活動のあり方に強い異議を訴えている。国際協力という一見、きれいな活動をしているかに見える組織の内部で、実は、普通の会社などと同じように人と人とのいさかいがあり、また外国人との対人関係の難しさが語られている。インタビュー形式で構成された本。

　貫戸朋子は、「国境なき医師団」の一員としてスリランカやボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナで診療に従事し、医師の倫理や人道援助の意味を問い続けてきた。西洋とアジアの深い溝も味わった。しかし、個々人の使命に支えられた活動が、世の中を、政治を変える原動力になるという確かな手ごたえも得た。貫戸は本書で、これからの新しい世界を担うＮＰＯ・ＮＧＯの活動に、多くの示唆を提示している。貫戸朋子の生き方を知ることができるありがたい一冊。

国境なき医師団の組織運営や活動体制が今後のNGOのみならず、社会システムにも活用できることがあると思った。例えば医師団には指令を出す中央機関が存在しないとある。各々の国の医師団が独自に活動しつつ、他の国の医師団と連携する。これは個人の自主意思による活動であるため、統制が返って負に機能するのかもしれない。（旧）社会主義国でも資本主義国でも、統制の行き過ぎによる過ちを我々は歴史より学んだが、それとは別の仕方でシステムを構築する試みが、先進的な医師団に現れてきているのかもしれない。これが「新たな社会思想だ」などと言うのではない。しかしたった一歩の前進に全力をかける医師団に、現今を乗り越えるものを垣間見た気がする。
