なんじゃこりゃ？と思って手に取った本書でしたが、めちゃめちゃ面白かったです。
人間の当たり前の生理現象である排便ですが、これをここまで詳細に、歴史をひもといている本は珍しいと思います。

大昔日本に来た外国人が、日本を清潔である、と評した記録が多数ありますが、これは日本が当時世界でもまれな、「クソまみれ」となっていない都市だった事によることなど、驚きの連続でした。
パリやロンドンの歩道がクソまみれであったために女性用のハイヒールが発明されたとか、2階から汚物を投げ捨てていたことなど、現在の西洋人が決して自ら明かさない歴史に抱腹絶倒です。

　うろ覚えで申し訳ないが、北京五輪を機に北京のニイハオトイレが改革されるとか、シンガポールでトイレ・ミシュランができるとか、宮崎駿が「大江戸汚物合戦」を制作しようとしたとかいう情報を聞いた覚えがある。トイレに関するウンチクもなかなか奥が深い。。。？
　本書は、1941年に生まれ1975年以来極北民族を中心に調査研究を続けてきた文化人類学者が、自らの進化主義的な「常識」や言葉の呪縛について再検討しつつ、松本弥による20のコラム（自然科学面を主にフォロー）を付して、1993年に刊行した300頁強の文庫本である。「トイレについて考えることは文化を考えることである」という言葉に始まり、世界各地の諸民族の排泄行為・羞恥心・清潔感・トイレ・糞尿利用法の多様なあり方や歴史的変遷について、具体的に論じている。トイレや糞尿は、あらゆる人間にとってきわめて重要な意味を持っているわけだが、これまであまり研究が進められてこなかった分野であり、著者はこの領域にあえてこだわることにより、人類文化の多様性を身近な形で論じている。論理的な構成をとっておらず、エピソード中心で、気軽に読める。末尾の「未開」論も重要。リサイクルに関心のある方にもお薦め。

ケツをふく。それだけで一章作れてしまうなんて…。
紙、砂、水、葉っぱ、コーンの毛。
ちょうどネパールにいた頃、バックパッカーにもらった本がこれだった。今まで紙で拭いてたケツを、水で洗う事にしたきっかけになった本。

うんちくや雑学的なお話が大量にあって、テンポ良く読めました。トリビア好きにはたまらん本だと思う。
イヌイットの尿利用法とか、目から鱗。是非みてほしい！！
