散々映画化されている『うたかたの恋』だが、現在日本語で読める文献はほぼない。で、映画のように実際は悲恋物語だったのかという興味半分で手に取ったのが本書。

内容は読んでからのお楽しみということで詳細は避けるが仕事一辺倒の父と旅に明け暮れる母の間に生まれ、祖母に育てられ、愛に飢えて育った皇太子ルドルフの苦悩。帝国という時代遅れの巨大なシステムと伝統が個人としてのルドルフを押しつぶしていく。

本書では決して美しくない事実が明らかになるわけだが、『うたかたの恋』がスキャンダルをもはや秘匿できなくなった時代において一つの美談として「記憶を書き換える」ために存在したことは興味深い。ヴェルディのオペラ『ドン・カルロ』や日本では『忠臣蔵』などスキャンダルを物語として昇華しようとする民衆の力は古今東西を問わず存在し、「美しくない事実を美しい真実として再構成する」のが人の本質であることがよくわかる。
