　書評家としてきわめて良質な面白い書評を書き続けてきた著者が逝った。存命中から
その正体に関してはいろいろな噂が立っていたことが懐かしい。
　本書ではヨーロッパ思想入門など、名著、良書が取り上げられている。
　著者最後の”書評”を心行くまで味読したい。

入門書というと普通、ハウツーものを考えがちだが、この本の捉え方は違う。そしてハッと気付かされる。あらゆる新書は本来、著者がいう意味での「入門書」なのではないかと…。
そして空前の新書ブームの中、脇道に逸れた新書があまりに多いことを知る。

この本は著者の闘病生活の中から刊行されたという。その一ヶ月後、読者は訃報に接することとなってしまった。まっとうな姿勢から紡ぎ出されたことばの一葉、一葉に、生命の最後の輝きが宿る。存命中にこの作品が完成したことがせめてもの救いとなった。
珠玉の１冊を遺された著者に感謝の意を込め、心からご冥福をお祈りする。

　やっぱり、うまいナァ、と思う。文句のつけようがない、知性も教養も感性も謙虚さも備えた、絶妙のバランスで書かれた本の紹介。
　もし、これに文句をつけるなら、｢あまりに絶妙のバランス｣だとか、｢それが紹介であること｣だとか、｢言いがかり｣としか言いようのない文句になるだろう。
　しかし私はその｢言いがかり｣を、敢えてつけてみたい。｢あまりに絶妙のバランス｣、｢紹介であることが惜しまれる｣、と。
　かつて金井美恵子は、確かどこかで、｢書評なんてバカでもできる｣と言い放った。あるいは蓮實重彦は、｢書評は批評としての覚悟を欠いた批評であり、いわば盗みであることの覚悟を欠いた盗み、つまり万引きに似ている｣という趣旨のことを言った(｢批評の断念／断念としての批評｣、『早稲田文学1』所収)。さらにあるいは高橋源一郎は自分の書評集に、『人に言えない習慣、罪深い愉しみ』というタイトルをつけた。そういう言葉も、コロコロと舌先に転がしてみる。
　私は何が不満なのか？　〈狐〉には知性も教養も感性も謙虚さも、絶妙なバランス感覚も備わっているというのに……しかし私は、知性と教養と感性と謙虚さと、絶妙なバランス感覚を備えた本の紹介を、どこかで許しがたく思う。

付記：枝葉末節ながら、p210の｢レオナルドがとりつかれたいわれがある｣は、私の語感では｢レオナルドがとりつかれたゆえんがある｣とすべきだと思う。またp212の｢一刀両断｣の用法には疑問がある。隙のない文章に、わずかに見つけた綻び、のようなものだが。
