ベックマン,ペートル
1924‐1993年。プラハ生まれ。プラハ工業大学でPh.D.を取得。1963年コロラド大学電気工学の客員教授となり、そのまま永住。自身の生い立ちから、歴史への関心も高く、カトリシズム、ナチズム、共産主義への嫌悪感を隠さない(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

非常に読み応えのある、興味深い内容にみちた書であるが、いかんせん原書が30年以上まえに書かれたものであるため、最先端の数学専攻の学生等にとっては、いささかデータが古いであろう。

さりながら、一般向けの数学本としては文句のない水準に達している。高校程度の数学 （あとできれば世界史） の知識があれば、内容でつまずくこともないだろう。

古代キリシア以前から現代に至るまでの「π」というものの歴史を平易（といっても内容は濃い）に説いた名著。
いろいろな本で参考図書として紹介されていながら、長らく絶版でしたがこの度、筑摩書房から復刊されました。（以前は蒼樹書房 ）
また、復刊にあたって版も変わったようなので、これは買いです。

　数学の美しさ、素晴らしさを、感動的なまでに感じさせてくれる本である。人類が、円の円周と直径の比が一定である事に初めて気が付いたのがいつであったかは誰にも分からない。しかし、紀元前２０００年には、バビロニア人とエジプト人が、その事に気付いたと、本書は、述べる。その古代の円周率から始まって、人類が、円周率にどの様に向かい合って来たかを、分かり易い言葉で語った名著である。 <br />　本書の著者ペートル・ベックマン（Ｐｅｔｒ・Ｂｅｃｋｍａｎｎ：１９２４−１９９３）氏は、プラハで生まれ、プラハ工業大学でＰｈ．Ｄを取得した後、１９６３年からコロラド大学の電気工学教授として、アメリカに在住した人物であるが、歴史にも関心の深い人物であったと、本書のカバーには書かれてある。実際、この本は、円周率にまつわる数学史を語りながら、法制史など、数学以外の歴史に関する興味深い記述も含んで居る。−−中国の数学に関する記述なども豊かで、著者の学識の深さを感じさせられる。 <br />　本書が、数学に関心の無い人々を含めて、多くの読者に読まれる事を期待する。
