前作が贖罪の物語であるなら、今作は逃避の物語といえるかもしれません。
独裁者の圧政を逃れ穏やかな日々を過ごしていた主人公達に襲いかかる奇病。
特効薬を求め、独裁者の元へ。さらには独裁者の記憶の中へ入っていく主人公の物語です。
しかし記憶の崩壊は進み、主人公は特効薬を探す使命を忘れはて、恋人に溺れていく。
意外に穏やかな独裁者の過去に驚きつつも、あふれる色彩と幻想の世界を堪能しました。

主人公は柳が渦巻く干上がった川をたどって本物の楽園へたどりつくのか。
土を積み重ねた海辺の都市で、いつか主人公とリアルな恋人は会えるのか。
三作目を心待ちにしています。

作品中、何度も語られるように、本書は『愛の物語』である。「きみを愛している」とささやく代わりに、クレイは「きみの存在を信じる」と告げる。独裁者ビロウの頭の中で、その記憶としての存在でしかないアノタインを想うクレイの気持ちは、しかし現実世界でも尚、リアルだ。つまりは、この現実世界そのものが、もしかすると夢なのでは？　というような意味に於いて。だからこそ、アノタインを残して元の世界に戻って来てしまったクレイの失意を、自らのことのように悼む。そしてまた、クライマックスでの緑のヴェールの役割も、より一層の効果を高めているように思う。
　面白かった。三部作の二作目。次回作を読むのが楽しみだ。
