福音館書店の編集者として、子どもの本の編集に携わってきた斎藤惇夫さんが、短大の学生に講義したものをまとめた一冊。子どもの本は、すぐれて最上のものでなくてはならない、という熱い思いが行間からほとばしる。編集者として、さまざまな場面に立ち会ったであろう斎藤さんのエピソードが生き生きと語られる。ノルウェー旅行のおりに、バスの運転手さんに語ってもらった「三びきのやぎのがらがらどん」。『つるにょうぼう』に７年かけた赤羽末吉さんのお話。すべて思いは同じ。「子どものためのものだからこそ、責任を持って、誠実に作らなくてはならない」。この姿勢は、話を聞いているであろう学生に対しても、おなじく貫かれている。おしみなく自分の思いや経験を差しだす、斎藤さんは美しい。子どもの読書に関心のある人はぜひ読んでいただきたい。学校の先生にもお薦めします。人生の先輩として、子どもたちにどのように本の世界を手渡すのか、という「問い」は、深く人生や、世界の在り方にも目を向けさせる。バイブルとでもよぶべき、大切な一冊です。

長年子どもの本の編集者として活躍してきた斉藤惇夫氏が、短大の学生に向けて子どもの本について話した講演録。さまざまなエピソードを紹介しながら導きだされた、「子どもたちに礼節をつくすことが、子どもに向かってかぎりなく近づいていくことが同時に、自分のもっとも深いところと向き合う」という斉藤氏の確信は美しい。学生に対しても、礼節をつくし、ご自身の経験を惜しみなく伝える姿に、思わず私は自分の姿をふり返った。物語の中で、子どもたちが思いっきり冒険するためには、その本を手渡し、読んであげる「水先案内人」が必要である、という深い思いも、具体的に説得力を持って述べられている。私のバイブルになるであろう大切な本。身近に子どもがいる人にも、いない人にもぜひ読んで欲しい本。子どもの本を考えることは、私たちの未来のヴィジョンを見つめることである。
