アテネオリンピックの観戦記だが、オリンピックのことだけでなく、アテネの風土はもちろん
観戦に訪れた各国の人々の姿を通して、それぞれの国民性にも言及しており、紀行文としても楽しめた。
作品中で「作家は読者にすきかってに批評される」と書かれており、それはその通りと謝るしかないが、一方、取材費でお供を従えてファーストクラスでオリンピック観戦にいき、高級ホテルに泊まって主要な競技を観戦し、（もちろん創作の苦労はあるだろうが）好き勝手な文章を書いて本になるのだから、私達から見るとうらやましい職業に見えますよ。
題名の「泳いで帰れ」は「長嶋ジャパン」にむけられた言葉。厳しい題名だが、全くその通りである。

とにかく痛快で面白い作品。自分も北京に行きたくなります（ただしエコノミーで）。
☆１つ分減点は、コストパフォーマンス。この本の分量で「邪魔」の文庫上・下巻きあわせたものより高いというのは、ちょっと高すぎじゃありませんか？

２００４年最大のスポーツイベント、アテネ五輪の観戦記。
スポーツ観戦記なのではあるが、「野球の国」同様、この作品もスポーツそのもの主眼がおかれているわけではなく、著者が何を見たか、何を感じたか、などが中心に描かれている。
何が心地よいかって、気取らない口調で本音が書かれていることだろう。スポーツにしろ、旅行記にしろ、美麗字句ばかりならべて批判は一切無しということが多いが、実際には腹立たしく思うこともあるわけだ。見ているのは人間なのだから、そう思うのは当然。そんな感情を押し殺すのではなく、素直にそれを表現してあるので、こちらとしても「全くだ」と共感できる。いや、痛快。

「そうですか。「長嶋」とつくと、誰も何も言えないわけですか。選手もこれで護られるわけだ。」
こんなことを書けるのは、奥田氏だけだと思う。全く同感だ。

この本は、2004年のアテネオリンピックの観戦記である。中心は、野球である。その他、陸上競技、柔道などである。見ているところは、試合と言うより観客の様子である。各国の国民性を観客を通して観察しているようである。一般観客の視点から見た観戦記である。決してスポーツジャーナリストや野球解説者から見た観戦記ではない。だから、長嶋ジャパンについても面白おかしく書けたんだろう。確か、直木賞の授賞式に参加しなかったんですよね。

私も、長嶋ジャパンには「泳いで帰れ」と言いたい感じだった。ホテルは貸切など金をかけた割には、面白い試合が数少なかったからです。いい投手にあったらなかなか打てないことはあるとしても、オーストラリアに2回負けたなど腹立たしい思いがした。オーストラリアは日本チームのことをよく調べていたのに対し、日本はオーストラリアのことを調べつくしていない。つまり、情報戦で負けた感じがする。また、全体的に選手たちが硬すぎたようにも思えた。今後は、どういうチーム編成にするかということと国際ルールへの対応をどうするかということを考えていかないといけないだろう。

今度は、2006年のトリノオリンピックやMLBの観戦記を出版してほしいですね。
