圧倒的な文章をものする作家としてもはや確固たる地位を築いた京極夏彦が、一方でまたデザイナーとして装丁の分野でも活躍している事はファンの間ではすでに有名だ。その彼が自らの衝撃的デビュー作である本作をブローアップ、美しい四六版ハードカバーに再生させた。デザインはもとより紙質からフォントにまで拘ったまさに「職人のワザ」、書痴・京極堂ならではの美本となった。内容は最初のノベルズ版ではなく講談社文庫版を底本としており、特に新しい部分が加筆されているというわけではないが、実は購入者特典として、短編「川赤子」の豆本が貰える引換券がついている。ファンとしてはむしろこれ目当てに購入を決意する人も多いのではないか。
