前作の400ページを超える長編ルポとは趣を異にして、今回は写真が豊富に掲載されたフォトブックの体裁。相変わらずニュートラルな旅人の視線による歴史発見の旅の様子が読み応え十分に描かれている。もっとも前作とは違い、旅が時系列に描かれるわけではない。「神社と鳥居」「日本時代の建築物」「日本語教育」「日本人の伝えた文化」など、どちらかといえば主にテーマ別に項目がつくられている。ルポタッチもあれば、エッセイタッチもあり、紀行文タッチ、研究者タッチの文章もある。そこに通底しているのは、日本時代の痕跡と記憶に対する真摯なまなざしだ。すべてを見てみたいという著者の思いが伝わってくる。
戦後60年目だった昨年は、テレビ番組などで戦争関連の企画が多くあったが、この本が伝えるような「ニッポン」の姿は決して見ることができなかった。じっくりと時間をかけたゆえに成立した、ノンフィクションならではの労作だと思う。

追記。写真集ではないのだが、「写真で読む」と銘打っているだけあって写真の印刷が特に美しい。そのせいか陰惨な記憶がこびりついているはずの戦争遺跡が、なんともいえない不思議な輝きを放って見える。個人的には215ページの南洋桜と鳥居の写真が胸を打ちました。写真を見るだけでも一見の価値はあります。

西牟田靖の作家としての肝は「等身大」の目線だ。
70年生まれという世代の、「戦争」についての距離感の等身大。
旅先で出会うあらゆる事象を曇りなく見つめることができる感覚。
ゆえにその右往左往する著者の姿すらも、
同じ目線で彼の「旅」を追体験する際の重要なファクターとなる。
確かに知識という面では物足りない部分もある。だが、
歴史の専門家ではないからこそ見えてくるものが、
間違いなく、この本にはあふれているのだ。

前作『僕の見た「大日本帝国」』同様に、ニュートラルに自然体で綴られる、かつての大日本帝国をめぐる旅。だが本としてのスタイルはガラッと変わり、純粋なルポ形式ではなく、写真と文章が半々ぐらいの構成となっている。この書き手の次回作を心待ちにしていたのだが、なるほどこうきたかというのが第一印象。もっとも、右にも左にも偏ることなく歴史と記憶を見つめるという基本的なスタンスに変わりはない。前作の「厚み」にひるんだ（？）方は、まず本書のほうから手にとってみることをお勧めしたい。あの時代の記憶を伝える数々の写真が、かつてそこにあった大日本帝国の姿をよりビビッドに浮かび上がらせている。それは、いまなお戦争の勝者と敗者の思いが交錯する場所だ。もちろん文章も平易で読みやすい。日本とアジアの「過去と現在」について考えるとき、ベースとなるべき確かな視点を提示してくれる貴重な一冊。
