田宮 俊作
1934年、静岡県生まれ。早稲田大学法学部卒業後、父・義雄氏が経営する田宮商事に入社。模型の企画・設計に携わる。77年、(株)田宮模型社長。84年、(株)タミヤ社長。94年、静岡模型教材協同組合理事長。95年、(財)タミヤ奨学会理事長。2005年、日頃の自衛隊活動への協力に対して陸上自衛隊東部方面総監より感謝状を授与される。06年、浜松市美術館にて「田宮俊作展」開催。06年に大分市美術館、07年に静岡県立美術館で催された「ボックスアート原画展」で講演。07年、世界最大のドイツ・ニュルンベルク・トイフェアにて出展40周年の表彰を受ける(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　『田宮模型の仕事』の文庫化の際と同じように大幅に加筆されていて良心的。

　日本を絨毯爆撃したB29など「自分の目の黒いうちは自分が嫌だと思う飛行機の模型は絶対つくらない」と宣言するミスター田宮ですが、たぶん、今回、加筆されたと思うところでも、太平洋戦争の思い出を語っています。静岡駅近くの実家で兵員輸送の列車が止った時、「これに水を入れてください」と差し出された水筒が竹の筒だったというのを見て《（竹ではこの戦争に勝てない…）とこの時、私は実感した》(p.17)というんですね。ふーん、竹の筒をつかっていたんですか…アカンわな。

　マブチモーターが世界一のメーカーになったのは《コイルを巻いて磁場をつくるモーターではなく、初めから磁場をもっている磁石をつくって動かす》(p.93)フェライトモーターへの転換だったというのも、なるほどな、と。MM(ミニタリー・ミニチュア)シリーズの兵士のフィギュアは、人間の1/7の寸法で原型をつくってもらい、それを立体縮小彫刻機のパンタグラフで倣い、1/5に縮小すると1/35の人間の金型ができる(p.170)というような話もうれしいかぎり。

田宮模型が「模型」というものにかける情熱が伝わってきました。
社長の情熱が周囲の人、世界中の人を動かしてここまで大きくなったのだと感じました。
本書はタミヤのプラモデルを多少でも作ったことがないと、分かりにくいのではないかと思います。
自分が作ったことのないプラモデルに関する章は、ちょっと読むのが難しかったです。

大井川の流れを生かした流通による木材を使用した学校教材からプラモデル業へと…。静岡県にあれだけ模型メーカーが存在するのはそういった理由からである。
その中でも常にハイレベルな商品づくりをしていて、常にトップの座にあるのが田宮模型だろう。この本はその模型メーカーを作り上げた田宮俊作氏を中心に、かつての模型ブームなどについて述べた一冊である。
男の子ならば、タミヤの模型にお世話になった、いや、今もお世話になっている人が多い事だろう。この本を読んでいて、小学生の頃に車のプラモにハマり、大学生の頃までよく作っていた事を思い出した。小学生の頃は当時流行っていたソアラを幾つ作ったか分からない程だった。しかし、タミヤの製品というのはいわゆるバリも皆無だし、パーツとパーツの合わせ目もキチッとしていた。特に中学生の頃に作ったフェラーリＦ40のリヤカウルのスポイラーの一体s成型など、「どうやって金型に入れたのだろう？」と思う程の素晴らしさであった。各社競作で他メーカーからもＦ40が発売され、それらも作ってみたが、どれもタミヤのクオリティにはかなわなかった。
また、一世を風靡したミニ四駆や、1/24のクルマ、Ｒ/Ｃなどには欠かせないマブチモーター社についても述べられている。数年前に馬渕社長親子が放火により殺害されたニュースはとてもショックを受けた。それぐらいにタミヤの模型同様、マブチのモーターも身近な存在だったし、タミヤにとってマブチというのは切っても切れない関係だったのだろう。
さて、以前も田宮模型について書かれた本は幾つかあったが、この本は更に良くなっている。模型好きなら書架に収めたくなる一冊だろう。
