　NHKラジオ・スペイン語講座のテキストに2005年4月号から3年間連載されたコラムをもとにした一冊です。著者はマドリッドの大学で専任講師を務める言語学博士。

　スペイン語に限らず日本語でも英語でも、相手と会話するときにストレートに事実関係を述べるだけでは、確かに意味を伝えることはできても、感情をそぎ落とした乾いたやりとりになってしまうでしょう。スペイン語のコミュニケーションを人間くさい、味のあるものにするための「スパイス表現」を４５個選んで紹介しているのがこの本です。

　取り上げられている表現をいくつか引いてみると：
　Vaya por Dios! まいったな！
　Y dale.　またかよ。
　No me lo explico. 理解に苦しむよ。
　Ya veremos.　今にわかるよ。

　自分の感情を、日本人の目から見れば遠慮会釈のないほどきっぱりと表すスペイン人ならではの表現がてんこ盛りで、なかなか勉強になります。こうした表現が自然と口をついて出てくるようになればしめたものでしょう。

　200頁をわずかに超える程度の本ですが、著者には引き続きこうした「スパイス表現」を拾って、続編を書いてもらいたいものです。

　最後にひとつだけ補足しておきますが、この本に掲げられているのはあくまでイベリア半島で話されるスペイン語です。
　中南米でも同じ意味で使われる表現もありますが、なかにはそうではないものもあります。
　例えば、「Venga!」は相手を促す「さあさあ」、「ほらほら」を意味する表現だと第35章で紹介されていますが、私は中米ホンジュラス人の友人に向かってこの言葉を使ったところ、「それはスペイン人の言い方よ」と言われました。ホンジュラスでは「Venga!」は文字通り、動詞venir（来る）の命令形として、「来てください」ということしか意味しないということでした。

スペイン語会話は何年もならったのですが、スペインに最初に行ったときに、国立図書館で全く通じませんでした。
特別の人しか入れないというので、自分の身分を説明するときです。
結局、英語で説明して入れました。
それ以来、スペイン語に自信がなくなりましたが、本書で納得できました。
この本に書かれているようなことは全くしらなかったので、余裕がなかったのだと。
