全日本女子バレーチームについて、柳本監督側からの意見を4点、知りたくて買った。監督と選手の考えのずれがよくわかった。

監督は、新日鐵チームであきらかに取れないボールを取れと言うしごきを受けたそうだ。「理論がないシゴキに意味はない」という監督。しかし辻選手に対して同じ事をしていた。この件について監督は何も書いていない。

2004年3月、全日本は宮崎の温泉地で最初の合宿。選手の疲れを考慮して身体の手入れ・基礎トレーニングをさせるためだ。監督はVリーグでぼろぼろになった吉原と佐々木は不参加だった、とあっさりと記述している。しかし吉原は1週間、治療のために合流を遅らせて欲しいと申し出、監督はそれをわがままだと断じたのだ。吉原と監督は言い合いになり吉原は不参加。治療を受けてから所属チームに戻った吉原と佐々木。そこに竹下と大村から電話が入った。「居て欲しい」と。戻った吉原と佐々木を、監督は笑って迎え入れた。

そんな中、苦しんでいたのが大山。監督は「大山を甘やかしては伸びない」「小さく育って欲しくはない」「今が大山の殻を破らせるタイミングだ」と判断した。しごきが始まった。だが、監督の思いを知らない大山は「バレーが嫌いになった。そんな自分がもっと嫌いになった」と更に落ち込んだ。（ただ、後に監督の思いを理解した大山は、監督にお礼を述べている）

そしてアテネ直前。ワールドグランプリで監督はスタメンを固定しなかった。監督の思惑は「オリンピック出場権を獲得したことで脱力感が出てしまう。一度チームをつぶして引き締める」。だが、これは選手達にとってマイナスとなった。一体感を取り戻せなくなった選手達。これは監督唯一にして最大のミスだったのではないか、と自分は今も思う。

どの世界でも上に立って責任を負うのはきついし辛い。達成感も大きいが、反対に苦しいことも多い。それをアテネまでたった1年でオリンピックに出られるチームをつくった。やはりすごい監督だったと思う。

バレーボールファンのみならず、広く組織の指導者、管理者の方々にもお薦めの本です。
女性の特性、女性心理把握のコツと言ったことだけでなく、データの重要性も説くなど、管理職として必要とされる要素が盛り込まれているからです。こういう本を待ち望みながらも、出会ったことの無かった方は大勢いると思いますよ！
