似たような気持ちによくなるのに、うまく言葉で言い表せない、けっこう親しい友だちにだってあんまり込み入った説明をするまでもない、毎日のたわいのない疑問、怒り、いたずら、不安、感動、言い訳、後悔。
それらがつぶさにエッセイに短歌に表現されていて、まさに「そうそうそう、そんな感じ」と深くうなずいてしまうことの連続です。

どこか日常になじみきれない・でも話の合いそうな人と偶然知り合った気がする、不思議な一冊です。

私が穂村弘氏に注目したのはあの歌集「手紙魔まみ、夏の引越し(ウサギ連れ)」からだ。まるで抽象的。なのに心臓をえぐられるような鋭利な視点。上手く言葉には出来ない。でもこの感覚を知っている。そう思わせる歌だった。

このエッセイを読んで、穂村氏が短歌で何をしようとしていたのかを、私はやっと分かった気がする。穂村氏は歌という現実とも非現実もいえない空間で自己を確認していたのだ。彼の人生に対する姿勢には私も共感できる部分がある。

また、穂村氏の妄想の世界（かなり凄い現代人の妄想の世界が展開されている）には笑えるが、それは痛々しさを伴う。なぜだろう。たぶん、笑いは穂村氏の感じている孤独と、それでも世界と繋がりたいという求心から引き起こされ、それは同時に私自身の姿とも少し重なり悲しみを呼ぶからだろう。

穂村氏は本の中で自分のことを「恋愛霊」「青春ゾンビ」と呼んでいたが、これも笑いだけを狙ったのではないだろう。それは現実の自分と自分の精神とに常にギャップを感じる現代人の象徴でもある。その代表のようなこのエッセイは、現代の孤独と世界とのつながりについて書かれたものとしては、かなりの高級品だ。

この本を読んで、あまりにも自分と似ているので驚きました。普通の人が普通に振舞う「自然に」ということができない、そのことを表した「世界音痴」という造語はみごとですね。私も実は世界音痴でした。寿司屋での注文が「自然に」できない、半そでを着始めることが「自然に」できない、などなど。かなり誇張されたことも多いですが、かかれているエピソードの大半が共感できることでした。でも、これは案外多くのひとが他人にはいえないけど思っていることだったりして。

それぞれの文章の終わりに付された短歌も秀逸。

置き去りにされた眼鏡が砂浜で光の束を見ている九月
ほんとうにおれのもんかよ冷蔵庫の卵置き場に落ちる涙は
甘い甘いデニッシュパンを死ぬ朝も丘にのぼってたべるのでしょう
終バスにふたりは眠る紫の〈降りますランプ〉に取り囲まれて
