初版が出た年に気象の仕事を始めました。大学で気象学を勉強しなかった私にはわかりやすくうってつけの本でした。気象予報士試験のときに読み直し、第2版になって再度購入し読み直しました。3度読んでの感想はやはり名著です。今後もこれ以上の気象の教科書は難しいかもしれません。筆者はやさしく説明するために気象学がわかった気になります。でも読み返すたびに奥の深さがわかるようになります。仲間がいるならゼミ形式で読むのも理解を深めます。座右の書、バイブルといってよいでしょう。

記述に飛躍がなく丁寧で、数式をできるだけ使わずに気象学を説明しようとしているので、時間をかけて読んでいけば、現象の理屈が理解できるように書かれている。その反面、読破するのにある程度の根気が必要。

気象現象に対する知的好奇心が少しでもある人にとって、推理小説でも読むような気分であせらず読んでいけば気象予報士試験準備の半分くらいは、この本だけで終わると思う。

気象予報士試験の一般知識分野の学習ではこの本を何回も読み直しました。
気象予報士を目指す人であれば,学科試験の一般知識(法規除く)はこの本でだいたいカバーできます。
難しい数学や物理の知識は必要ありませんが,高校で学ぶ程度の数学の知識は最低限必要かと思います。
本の内容はよく出来ており,読み始めた当初はすべて理解できるか不安でしたが(いまだに全ては理解できていませんが…),「この本で勉強していこう」という気にさせてくれるくらい,しっかりした内容になっています。
数式だけ,言葉だけによる傲慢な説明ではなく,両者による説明がほどよくなされていると思います。
