   前作『N・E・W・S』がインスト・アルバムだったから、歌モノのオリジナルとしては2002年の『レインボー・チルドレン』以来となる。その『レインボー……』はジャズ色の濃い作品だったが、僕個人としては久々に聴き込んだプリンスのアルバムだった。その後の来日公演で見せた素晴らしいステージからも、近年の彼の充実ぶりは十分に感じ取ることが出来ていた。とうぜんこの久々のメジャー配給盤への期待もかなり膨らんでいたが、これは予想を裏切らぬ充実した仕上がり。王道であるファンク路線に回帰したいかにもプリンスらしい曲が並び、アップからミディアム、バラードに至る変幻自在ぶりも含め、ワン＆オンリーな個性でグイグイと聴き手を惹きこむ魔力は健在だ。（木村ユタカ）

このアルバムを聞いてPrinceは終わりないと思いました。
高校時代からPrinceは聞いていて、もう13年ぐらいになりますが、
今回のMusicologyは3本の指に入る最高アルバムです。

どうして、こういう音楽を生み出されるの？

さすがです。　Prince。　天才です。

　かつて「あたりまえ」であった生演奏によるトラック･メイキングは、いまやターンテーブルとコンピュータの一般化により少数派となった。

　最新のテクノロジーは演奏能力という高い敷居を取り払い、より曲作りを身近にし、数多くの新たな才能の発掘に寄与した。しかし、反作用として生演奏の強みである「肉体性」を音楽から奪う結果となってしまった。プリンスの作品にはその「肉体性」が溢れている。

このアルバムは熱心なファンが心の何処かで期待する８５年以降の
偉大なポピュラー音楽史にどでかい足跡を残す作品でも、９４年の
最後の名作Goldみたいな夢見がちな未来派パイパーアルバムでもない。
このアルバムはＪＢ以来の伝統的な黒人ファンクの作成名人が熟練の技を披露する極めて円熟した金太郎飴みたいなアルバムである。

昔の革新的な音を求めるファンは失望するだろう。ヨクヨク考えてみよう。現在のシーンで此れほどソウルを感じさせるアーティストがいるだろうか。ソウルを感じさせるアルバムとしてはこれは満点だと思う。
正統に評価されるべきソウル史に残るマスターピースとして５点。
