外国人と知り合いになったり、友人になると否が応でも日本の歴史に直面するときがあります。その時に戦勝国によって作られた歴史ではなく、毅然として日本の立場を以下の点から主張できるようになると思いました。
自衛のための戦争であったということ
戦犯を作り上げた裁判自体が不当なものであったこと
捕虜の扱い方がとても人道的であったこと
インドネシアでオランダからの独立を助け、自治を認め、再び欧米の植民地にされそうになったときに一緒に戦ったこと

歴史や日本という国を見直すいいきっかけになる本です。

子どもの頃「20世紀の記録」という本を読み、
太平洋戦争開戦はアメリカの謀略ではないかと
思っていた。

世界大戦という表沙汰になり、
敗戦国が悪とされたが、
それ以前に西欧諸国は
たくさんの植民地を帝国主義の名の下に占領し、
アメリカにしたって
アメリカインディアンと呼ばれる本来のアメリカ人を虐殺して
ヨーロッパ人が占領してできた国であると思っていたら、
映画「ラスト・サムライ」で見事に描かれていた。

日本人は自虐的に自国を恥じるよう
擦り込まれている。
しかし、正しい戦争などありはしない。
したがってどちらが正義と言うこともない。
歴史の教科書で時代を動かした人の多くは、
殺人者である場合が多い。
世論の支持を得たかどうかで結果が大きく変わる。
勝てば官軍なのである。

この本はまんがであるために親しみやすい。
どちらが善でどちらが悪かという単純な戦争の見方ではなく、
フラットに見るという点で日本よりの視点は、
自虐的な日本人にとっては
公平な新たなる視点になるのではないかと思う。

インパクトのタイトルに興味をそそられたが、
実際に読んでみると、そもそもマンガとして成立していない内容。

全体的に相当に説明不足で、歴史にかなり詳しい人ならともかく
何も知らない人が「マンガだから読みやすいかも」と手を出しても
まったく意味がわからない状態。
１つのエピソードが数ページで終わるが
前提として必要な知識、ラストにたどり着くまでの過程、
読者が感銘を受けるべき結末のどれもがわかりにくい。

場面の切り替わりや登場人物の描き分けなども甘く、
その出来事を理解している作者がイメージの一部だけを
無理やりマンガにしてしまった印象。
まだ話が続くと思ったら次のページから別のエピソードになるようなことも多く、
結末らしい盛り上げや「ええっ、そうだったのか！」と思わせる衝撃は皆無。

これならばエピソードの数は少なくてもいいから
ひとつひとつにもっとページ数を割いて
どんな人でも同じように理解を得られる本にして欲しかった。
読者への配慮不足に伴って、内容の説得力も感じられなかった。
